Task Overview
Reading Passage
Hyperpredation Predator-prey relationships are normally kept in balance naturally;that is,if a predator species kills too many of its prey, then the predator's population will eventually decline because it now lacks sufficient prey to eat.The reduction in the predator population then allows the prey population to increase again, and the cycle continues. Sometimes, however, the normal predator-prey balance breaks down and predators become unusually abundant, which is known as hyperpredation.Hyperpredation usually occurs following the introduction of a second, alternative prey. This additional food source allows predator numbers to greatly increase and can even result in the extinction of the original, primary prey.

The speaker's response does not fully illustrate the concept of hyperpredation as presented in the reading and listening materials. The response lacks a clear connection between the introduction of rabbits to the island and the resulting hyperpredation of the parakeets by cats. To improve topic development, the speaker should focus on clearly explaining how the introduction of rabbits as an additional food source led to an increase in the cat population, which in turn caused the extinction of the McQuarrie Island parakeets due to hyperpredation. Providing a more coherent and well-organized response with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples will help improve the topic development aspect of the answer.
Original Answer: In the reading materials, the author presents that there is always a balance between the prey and the predators and if there is another food resources for the predator, it will break down the balance and it will cause hyperpredation, which relates to what the lecturer in the listening material presents. In the reading passage, it is mentioned that a balance exists between predators and their prey, and if an additional food source is introduced for predators, this balance will be disrupted, leading to hyperpredation. This concept is further illustrated by the lecturer in the listening material.
The lecturer in the listening material just says that there is a few cats in the remote Australian 19th century. The lecturer mentions that a few cats were introduced to a remote Australian island in the 19th century.
However, the wild cat's population became increased, which degrades the balance between the cats because the population of the cats was increased and many people love the cats and they have some rabbits to eat and they expand around and cause the cat's population to increase, which will degrade the balance. However, as the wild cat population increased due to an abundance of food sources like rabbits, it disrupted the balance between predators and prey on the island.
Revised Answer (140 words): In the reading passage, it is mentioned that a balance exists between predators and their prey, and if an additional food source is introduced for predators, this balance will be disrupted, leading to hyperpredation. This concept is further illustrated by the lecturer in the listening material. The lecturer mentions that a few cats were introduced to a remote Australian island in the 19th century. Initially, the cats and their primary prey, the parakeets, coexisted without any major issues. However, when rabbits were introduced to the island as an additional food source for the cats, it led to a significant increase in the cat population. As a result, the balance between predators and prey on the island was disrupted, causing hyperpredation and eventually leading to the extinction of the McQuarrie Island parakeets.
