Task Overview

Professor

Nowadays, the world is facing a number of pressing environmental problems, and over the next few weeks, we'll be discussing various innovations that may help solve these problems. To begin our discussion, I'd like you to think of one global environmental problem, for example, it could be related to water, air, land, climate, biodiversity, energy, or something similar. Then explain what you think ·would be an effective solution to this problem.

Kelly

One of the major environmental prob le TIS is the limited freshwater supply in many areas of the world, which means that we need to find effective technologies to provide people with enough drinking water. One solution is to improve the te1chnology for removing salt from seawater, which could allow us to use seawater to replenish dwindling freshwater supplies.

Paul

I think the biggest problem is the air pollution caused by the overuse of motorized vehicles. The obvious solution is for local governments to promote alternatives, like building bike lanes in cities or improving public transportation with electric buses Both of these would be easy to implement as well

From my perspective, I think that one of the most serious environmental problems is the air pollution. So I agree with Paul's idea. However, I have my own reason about it. In some cities of my country, the air is seriously polluted. The main reason is that the government puts more attention on enhancing economic growth than the environmental protection. As a result, the air is not as clean as it used to be. One solution to solve the problem is that government should care more about the air pollution. For example, they can set up the law which encourages industry to develop in an innovative way, like creating novel products to filter the air. Besides, it will be better for people not to cut down trees. Because trees serve as the air cleaner. Though Kelly's idea is reasonable to some extent, it ignores the problem that when producing the technology, it gives rise to some pollution, like the air pollution. Maybe it also requires the raw materials like trees. As a result, I agree with Paul's idea.

Evaluation Result

  • Relevance and Contribution to Discussion: 4.5

  • Clarity and Elaboration of Viewpoint: 4.0

  • Language Use and Grammar: 3.5

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

In my opinion, air pollution stands as one of the most critical environmental issues we face today. While I concur with Paul's viewpoint, I would like to present my own rationale. In certain cities within my country, air quality has significantly deteriorated due to the government prioritizing economic growth over environmental protection. Consequently, the once pristine air is now heavily polluted. A viable solution would involve increased governmental focus on mitigating air pollution. For instance, implementing legislation that encourages industries to adopt innovative approaches, such as developing cutting-edge products for air filtration, could be highly beneficial. Moreover, preserving existing forests and discouraging deforestation is crucial since trees function as natural air purifiers. Although Kelly's suggestion of improving desalination technology has merit, it overlooks the potential pollution generated during production processes and the possible depletion of natural resources like forests. Therefore, I find myself in agreement with Paul's proposal for addressing this pressing environmental challenge. (159 words)
