Doctor Achebe

We've been discussing the idea that human well-being is not necessarily improved by ever-increasing production and consumption of goods and services. Some people argue that humans already consume too many goods, from clothing to electronics to food; they believe that excessive consumption has created serious problems for humanity and even the planet. Do you agree that excessive consumption--buying more than we truly need--has become a serious problem? Why or why not?

Andrew

I absolutely agree. We buy far more than we need, and that can't continue indefinitely. For years people have used shopping as a form of recreation. The products bought on a whim are filling up landill, and the energy expended producing the goods has created a global warming crisis. We should start gradually reducing consumption

Claire

I disagree with the idea that over-consumption is a dramatic problem. I agree there is some over-consumption, but it happens mostly with wealthy people. I think in general almost everyone else already buys only what they need. In fact, many people around the world are not even able to obtain everything they need.

In my opinion, excessive consumption presents more advantages than disadvantages. I wholeheartedly concur with Claire's assertion that over-consumption is not a substantial issue, as it predominantly occurs among the affluent. Expanding on Claire's perspective, I contend that over-consumption can foster economic growth and alleviate unemployment rates. As one might anticipate, increased consumption necessitates more factories and industries, offering numerous opportunities for job seekers to engage in the production process, ultimately promoting economic development and addressing unemployment concerns.

While Andrew underscores the negative aspects of over-consumption, such as recreational shopping and contributing to the global warming crisis, he overlooks the potential solutions to these issues. Governments can implement stricter policies regarding industrial and manufacturing processes, thereby effectively addressing the concerns he raised. (124 words)

I agree with Andrew’s viewpoint that people buy too much when shopping. When people go shopping, they buy a lot. This is because they do not have an exact thing that they need to buy. It totally depends on their mood as to what to buy or not to buy. For instance, when I go shopping with my friends, it is really hard to stop when we find yourself going into one shop after another. I have two full boxes of stationery; however, I still like to change pencil cases and pens every few months. All the pens that I don’t use will either be thrown away or stored in my room until the ink drys up. This is a problem since it is very wasteful to throw all the plastic away. I buy way too much stationary that I do not need for school. In conclusion, when people don’t have a clear plan of what to buy, they will most likely buy more than they truly need, and these things will be wasted.

In response to Professor Achebe's question, I concur with Andrew that excessive consumption has become a significant issue in today's society. The act of shopping often leads individuals to purchase items based on their emotions rather than necessity. For example, during my shopping excursions with friends, we frequently find ourselves entering numerous stores and making impulsive purchases. Despite already owning an abundance of stationery, I continue to acquire new pencil cases and pens every few months. Consequently, unused items either end up discarded or stored until they are no longer functional.

This behavior not only contributes to environmental waste but also highlights the lack of mindful consumption. When individuals lack a clear plan or awareness of their needs, they tend to acquire more than necessary, ultimately leading to the squandering of resources. To address this issue, it is crucial for society to adopt more sustainable consumption habits and prioritize mindful purchasing decisions. (155 words)

Nowadays, people cannot live without tech products. However, they often make some mistakes when pursuing technological devices. And in my opinion, the biggest mistake consumers make is using the price of products as the standard for judging their quality. That’s to say, people always consider that the tech products with higher price have better quality. However, although some tech products are expensive, their quality is not so good as consumers expect. And some less expensive tech products also offer a long working life, such as Nokia’s phones. Additionally, the high price of the products is also related to the company’s established brand image and sophisticated marketing strategies. Some companies resort to exaggerated advertising to captivate consumers, leading them to mistakenly equate high prices with superior quality. All in all, if consumers pay too much attention to the prices of tech products, they may ignore other important factors and they may not find the one they truly need. So, I think that’s the biggest problem.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

In today's fast-paced world, technology has become an integral part of our lives. Nevertheless, when purchasing tech products, consumers often commit errors that prevent them from making the most suitable choices. In my view, the most significant mistake lies in equating a product's price with its quality. A common misconception is that higher-priced items guarantee superior performance and longevity. However, this is not always the case, as some expensive products may not live up to expectations, while more affordable options can provide exceptional durability and functionality, such as Nokia phones.

Moreover, it is essential to recognize that a product's price may be influenced by factors beyond its intrinsic value, such as a company's brand image and marketing strategies. Some businesses employ persuasive advertising techniques to create an illusion of exclusivity and quality associated with their high-priced offerings. Consequently, consumers who focus solely on price might overlook other crucial aspects when selecting tech products and ultimately fail to find the best match for their needs. Therefore, it is imperative for individuals to consider a wide range of factors beyond pricing in order to make well-informed decisions regarding technology purchases. (193 words)
