How a Task 2 band is scored
IELTS examiners use four official writing band descriptors for Task 2, and the checker scores your essay against the same four. Task 2 carries about twice as many marks as Task 1.
- Task Response
- Fully answer the question and keep a clear position. Ideas are relevant and supported with examples.
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Logical organisation, with clear paragraphs and linking words that connect the ideas.
- Lexical Resource
- Precise vocabulary for the topic, without repeating the same words.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- A variety of complex sentences, with few errors.
Most high-band answers use four paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion.
