3 exercises · Intermediate & advanced difficulty · Answers with explanations

What makes these exercises advanced?

These passages use CEFR B2–C1 level vocabulary from academic domains such as biology, history, and environmental science. The C-test deletion rule is identical to the real TOEFL, but the words are harder to restore due to less common roots and more complex sentence structures.

Who Are These Exercises For?

Recommended level:TOEFL Reading 20–26

These exercises are designed for students who have already completed beginner-level practice and can consistently restore 8+ words correctly. If you understand the C-test deletion rule, these passages will challenge you with:

  • Academic vocabulary from science, history, and social research
  • Longer and more complex sentence structures
  • Less common word roots that require stronger morphological awareness
  • Time pressure — aim for 3–4 minutes per passage

Many errors come from choosing the right root but wrong form.

Were there words I didn't know at all?

Add them to a vocabulary list. Academic word roots recur across passages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are these exercises different from the beginner practice page?
These passages use more complex academic vocabulary (CEFR B2–C1), longer sentences, and topics from science, history, and social research. The C-test deletion rule is the same, but the words are harder to restore.
How fast should I complete each passage?
Aim for 3–4 minutes per passage. If you are consistently finishing under 3 minutes with 9–10 correct answers, you are well prepared for this section of the TOEFL.
Should I practice with a timer?
Yes — timed practice is important at this level. The real TOEFL is time-pressured, so building speed alongside accuracy is essential for a strong score.
What should I do when I encounter unfamiliar vocabulary?
Use the visible first half of the word, the grammar structure, and the surrounding context to make your best guess. After checking answers, add unfamiliar words to a vocabulary list for review.
How many exercises should I do before the real test?
There is no fixed number, but completing 20–30 passages at this difficulty level gives most students enough exposure to the patterns. Focus on reviewing mistakes, not just quantity.
Is Complete the Words the same as a C-test on the TOEFL?
Yes — 'Complete the Words' is the official TOEFL name for the C-test task type introduced in 2024. The format is identical: the second half of selected words is removed, and you must restore them using context, grammar, and vocabulary knowledge.
How is Complete the Words scored on the actual TOEFL?
Each correctly restored word earns one point. Partial credit is not given — spelling and form must be exact. On the real TOEFL, this task appears within the Reading section and contributes to your overall Reading score (0–30).
Can I use these exercises on mobile?
Yes — this page is mobile-friendly. However, for timed practice with instant scoring and progress tracking, LingoLeap's practice platform offers a better mobile experience with 60 dedicated exercise sets.
