A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some paleontologists interpret the lines as evidence that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. However, critics have opposed the idea that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur, citing several reasons. First, the critics points out that the fine lines may not even represent functional structures of a living dinosaur, but rather structures that were formed after the animal’s death. After the animal died and was buried in volcanic ash, its skin may have decomposed into fibers. The skin fibers then became preserved as lines in the fossil; the lines were misinterpreted as evidence of feathers. Second, even if the fine lines are remains of real structures of a Sinosauropteryx, scientists cannot tell with certainty what part of the dinosaur’s anatomy the structures were. Many dinosaurs had frills, ornamental fan-shaped structures growing out of some parts of their bodies. Some of the critics argue that the lines surrounding the skeleton are much more likely to be fossilized remains of frills than remains of feathers. A third objection is based on the fact that the usual functions of feathers are to help animals fly or regulate their internal temperature. However, the structures represented by the lines in the Sinosauropteryx fossil were mostly located along the backbone and the tail of the animal. This would have made the structures quite useless for flight and of very limited use in thermoregulation. This suggests that the lines do not represent feathers.

The reading passage opposes that the fine lines can serve as the evdience that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur, whereas the listening believes the evidences are strong and the critics are unconvincing. To begin with, the reading insists that the fine lines may be misinterpreted as evidence of feathers because of decomposition, while they are acutually skin fibers. The speaker, however, argues that the decomposition didn't occur to other animals at the same site. The other animals, also likely for the dinosaurs, were in perfect preserved condition, suggesting that the fine lines did represent feather, not skin fibers. Furthermore, the author of the reading claims that the fine lines may be fossilized remains of frills used for ornamentation than of feathers. In contrast, the professor suggests that there are chemical differences between the frills and feathers. The component of beta-keratin in the fossils could infer that the finelines were remains of feathers. Finally, the writer displays that the location of the lines implies that they are not function as feathers used for flight or temperature regulation. On the contrary, the lecturer indicates that the feather has other functions, such as the display function. The colorful feathers of dinosaurs can strongly supported that they had feathers used for display.

Section Title: 6.文章修订
The reading passage argues against the idea that the fine lines found on the Sinosauropteryx fossil serve as evidence for it being a feathered dinosaur, while the listening contends that the evidence is strong and the critics' arguments are unconvincing.
Firstly, the reading asserts that the fine lines may have been misinterpreted as evidence of feathers due to decomposition, suggesting they are actually skin fibers. In contrast, the speaker in the listening disputes this by stating that decomposition did not occur in other animals at the same site. The well-preserved condition of these other fossils implies that it is likely for Sinosauropteryx's fine lines to represent feathers rather than skin fibers.
Secondly, the author of the reading posits that these fine lines could be fossilized remains of frills used for ornamentation rather than feathers. However, the professor counters this argument by highlighting chemical differences between frills and feathers. The presence of beta-keratin in these structures suggests that they were indeed remains of feathers.
Lastly, the writer contends that since these structures were located along the backbone and tail of Sinosauropteryx, they could not have functioned as feathers used for flight or thermoregulation. Contrarily, the lecturer points out that feathers can serve other purposes such as display functions. The colorful nature of these structures strongly supports their classification as display feathers rather than non-feathered structures. (227 words)
