Task Overview

Doctor Diaz

Starting this week, we will discuss how public transportation is funded. Public transportation gives people from all social groups access to their homes, workplaces, and shopping. Some argue that public transportation should be supported by tax revenue so that all people could have free access to it. What do you think? Should public transportation be free to all? Why or why not?

Kelly

People already pay so much in taxes for things like schools, roads, and law enforcement. I don’t think that adding one more tax—especially when some people don’t even use public transportation—would be a good idea. People need money for other essentials for their families.

Paul

Free public transportation would result in having fewer cars on the roads. Also, it would mean cleaner air for the cities, and there are many health conditions that could be improved with cleaner air. I think the savings in health-care costs and less pollution would make it worth it.

In my opinion, public transport should be supported by tax revenue, driven by a constellation of factors. Firstly, echoing Paul's idea, free public transport can help to improve the natural and city environment. Free public transport reduces the reliance on private cars, which is the culprit of the burgeoning amount of carbon dioxide in the air. While free trains or buses give people the incentive to use public transport instead, allevitating the air pollution. Besides, congestion can be improved with fewer cars on the road. Secondly, free public transport can help to relieve the economic burden on the low-income family. As the low-income group rely mainly on the train or bus during daily commute, the free access can definely help them to save a significant amount of expenses.Hence, they can spend the money on other daily necessaries.

3. Task completeness

The essay does a good job of addressing the task requirements by expressing an opinion and contributing to the discussion. However, there is room for improvement in terms of elaborating on the viewpoint and providing more specific examples or details to support the arguments. Additionally, while the language use is mostly accurate, there are some minor grammar issues that could be improved.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Provide more specific examples or details to support your arguments.

  • Revise grammar and sentence structure for better clarity.

Examples:

  1. Instead of just mentioning "low-income families," provide a specific example or statistic about how much money they could save with free public transportation.

  2. To improve grammar, revise the sentence "Free public transport can help to relieve the economic burden on the low-income family" to "Free public transportation can help relieve the economic burden on low-income families."

4. Essay structure and organization

The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The organization is logical, with each paragraph focusing on a specific point and supporting details. However, transitions between ideas could be improved for better flow.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use clear transitions between ideas and paragraphs.

  • Make sure each paragraph has a clear focus.

Examples:

  1. Add a transition sentence at the beginning of your second paragraph like "In addition to environmental benefits,"

  2. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus by starting with a topic sentence such as "Another advantage of free public transportation is its potential impact on low-income families."

In my opinion, public transportation should be supported by tax revenue, driven by a multitude of factors.

Firstly, echoing Paul's perspective, free public transportation can contribute to improving both the natural and urban environment. As these individuals primarily depend on trains and buses for their daily commutes, granting them free access would enable them to save a significant amount of money. This additional income could then be allocated towards other essential expenses, ultimately improving their overall quality of life. (142 words)

As far as I'm concerned, I believe that Paul's belief is understandable that public transportation should be free. I'd like to stem from two primate reasons. Firstly, free transportation will undoubtedly decrease the payment, so that people no matter live in poverty places or remote areas will have chance to go anywhere they want more conveniently. Secondly, if the public transportation does not get money from people. Then, more and more people would choose to go out through public transportation like underground and buses. As a result, the primate cars would be less and the road would be not as croweded as it used to be, and it could save people's time to go to work. Personally, fewer cars on the road also means that the noise will not be louder than before, so I will no longer be waken up by the noise made by cars in the morning anymore.

From my perspective, I think public transportation should charge people. While I appreciate Paul's recognition of the environmental benefits that free public transportation would result in, I find Kelly's view on the distribution of taxes paid by citizens more compelling. Additionally, two significant reasons support my stance. Firstly, public transportation usually does not cost people too much. For example, taking a subway in my country only costs people 2 yuan. As a result, compared to other transportation like taking a taxi, public transportation is already the most cost-effective way. Secondly, for people living in less-developed area that do not have access to public transportation, it is unfair for them to pay additional taxes to construct public transportation in developed areas. For instance, in rural areas, it seems impossible for those people to save money for their daily compulsory needs while paying taxes to build subways in cities. In conclusion, the above two reasons explain why I contend that public transportation should not be free.

First, public transportation is generally affordable and already a cost-effective option compared to alternatives like taxis. For instance, in my country, a subway ride costs a mere 2 yuan. Second, it would be unjust for residents in less-developed areas without access to public transportation to bear additional tax burdens for the development of such infrastructure in more developed regions. I concur with Kelly's perspective that additional taxes should not be imposed on citizens to fund public transportation. Furthermore, I contend that increasing taxes for this purpose would exacerbate income inequality within society. Consider the impact of an extra fifty-dollar tax on both a wealthy and a low-income individual; while it may be inconsequential for the former, the latter might struggle to afford basic necessities due to their limited disposable income.

Paul suggests that offering free public transportation could reduce the number of cars on the road and improve air quality. While this may hold true to some extent, I believe that it could potentially worsen pollution issues. As more people utilize public transport when it is free, those who previously relied on such services might opt for private vehicles instead. They may perceive waiting for public transportation as a waste of time and prefer greater personal space afforded by their own cars. Consequently, I argue that an increase in ridership could ultimately lead to a higher number of individuals choosing private vehicles over public transit options. (181 words)

For example, with the advent of subway, people can reach one place more quickly and avoid the annoying traffic, some public transportation can actually facilitate decreasing the number of private cars, especially the free subway. I would add that free transportation can also decrease the traffic problems and the government can save money from decreasing the additional park lots. So people don't to worry about that they spend more money for government to build expensive public transportation.Overall, then, I'd say that government should free the public transportation to residents.

In considering the debate on whether public transportation should be free, I acknowledge Kelly's concern about the potential burden of additional taxes. I firmly believe that public transportation should be made available to everyone at no cost. As Paul mentioned, offering free public transportation would encourage more people to utilize these services, subsequently reducing the reliance on private vehicles and promoting environmental sustainability. Over time, this would foster a low-carbon lifestyle among citizens, contributing to the overall well-being of the city.

Admittedly, some may argue against additional taxes to fund free public transportation. However, it is essential to consider the long-term benefits and convenience it provides to the general public. Each time individuals utilize free public transportation services, they are likely to experience satisfaction and gratitude towards the government. While I appreciate both viewpoints mentioned by Kelly and Paul, I tend to say that the public transportation should not be free to all. It should be kept in mind that it's citizens who are taking public vehicles , so these people's economic ability play an important role in determining whether the transportation should be free or not. If most people, like current situations, have the standard to earn more than one thousand Renminbi per month, it means that governments should consider not it to be completely free, and that is the main purpose public transportation, which is to provide most people a fast and economical way to go elsewhere, and earn some public capitals. Meanwhile, Kelly contends that people already pay so much in taxes, but she did not mention that public transportation are already very cheap, which will not affect people's living standards at all. Consequently, only forty Renminbi for one month is already cheap enough and is suitable for everyone, hence completely free is a useless option.

3. Task completeness

The essay does a decent job addressing the task requirements, expressing an opinion on whether public transportation should be free or not, and providing reasons for that opinion. However, the essay could benefit from more specific examples and a clearer connection to the professor's question about transportation. To improve the essay, the writer should:

  • Provide more concrete examples to support their viewpoint.

  • Make a clearer connection to the academic discussion on transportation.

Example 1: Instead of just mentioning that public transportation is already cheap, provide specific data or comparisons to other expenses people have. Example 2: Discuss how making public transportation free might impact other aspects of transportation, such as traffic congestion or environmental concerns.

4. Essay structure and organization

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it could be improved in terms of organization and transitions between ideas. To enhance the essay's structure:

  • Use clear topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph to introduce the main point.

  • Improve transitions between ideas and paragraphs for better coherence.

Example 1: Start the second paragraph with a topic sentence like "One reason why public transportation should not be free is because it is already affordable for most citizens." Example 2: Add transitional phrases such as "Furthermore" or "On the other hand" when introducing new points or contrasting ideas within paragraphs.

In considering the perspectives presented by Kelly and Paul, I am inclined to believe that public transportation should not be universally free. It is essential to recognize that the economic capabilities of citizens utilizing public transport play a significant role in determining whether it should be free or not. Given the current situation where most individuals earn more than one thousand Renminbi per month, it suggests that governments should not make public transportation entirely free. The primary objective of public transportation is to offer a fast and economical means for people to travel while generating some public revenue. Furthermore, I think imposing additional taxes to subsidize free public transportation overlooks the consistency of individuals' specific needs with the utilization of public transportation, as not all individuals utilize this service. For instance, some residents could have their own vehicles that offer greater convenience and comfort than public transportation. In addition, they have to pay substantial expenses for fuel and maintenance of their vehicles. Consequently, funding public transportation through tax revenue may not be equitable for everyone. Regarding the contentious topic by the professor, I endorse the standpoint of Kelly. Just as Kelly elaborated, it is indisputable to say that the public the publicthe public(Repetition of two words ('at the at the')) already bears a significant tax burden for essential services such as education, infrastructure, and law enforcement and should not be required to afford the additional taxes. In addition, they have to pay substantial expenses for (Two consecutive spaces)fuel and maintenance of their vehicles. Consequently, funding public transportation through tax revenue may not be equitable for everyone. On the other hand, when considering Paul's argument, one limitation could be immediately found that (Two consecutive spaces)free public transportation could not guarantee a significant shift to public modes of transport, which means individuals would not abandon their private transportations, as private transportation could make it easier to meet individuals' personality demands due to their flexibility and personal satisfaction they provide compared to crowded public transportation.

Section Title: The Debate on Free Public Transportation

In response to the professor's question, I concur with Kelly's perspective on the issue. As Kelly rightly pointed out, the public already shoulders a considerable tax burden for essential services such as education, infrastructure, and law enforcement. Imposing additional taxes to subsidize free public transportation overlooks the varying needs and preferences of individuals in relation to their use of public transportation. For example, some residents may prefer using their own vehicles due to the greater convenience and comfort they provide compared to public transit. These individuals also incur significant expenses for fuel and maintenance of their vehicles. Consequently, funding public transportation through tax revenue may not be equitable for everyone.

On the other hand, Paul's argument has its merits but also contains a notable limitation. While free public transportation could potentially lead to fewer cars on the roads and cleaner air in cities, it does not guarantee a significant shift towards public modes of transport. Individuals may still opt for private transportation due to its flexibility and personal satisfaction compared to crowded public transit options.

In light of these arguments, it is crucial to consider alternative solutions that strike a balance between providing affordable access to public transportation while ensuring equitable distribution of costs among taxpayers. One possible approach could involve implementing targeted subsidies or discounts for specific groups such as low-income individuals or those with disabilities who rely heavily on public transit services. This would help alleviate financial burdens without imposing additional taxes on those who do not utilize these services regularly. (261 words)

Regarding the contentious topic by the professor, Section Title: The Debate on Free Public Transportation

In response to the professor's question, I endorse the standpoint of Kelly. ¶ Just as concur with Kelly's perspective on the issue (this revision clarifies that you are agreeing with Kelly elaborated, and connects it is indisputable to say that the public to the professor's question). As Kelly rightly pointed out (this phrase emphasizes that Kelly made a valid point), the public already bears a significant shoulders a considerable tax burden for essential services such as education, infrastructure, and law enforcement and should not be required to afford the additional taxes. Furthermore, I think imposing enforcement. Imposing additional taxes to subsidize free public transportation overlooks the consistency of individuals' specific varying needs with the utilization of public transportation, as and preferences of individuals in relation to their use of public transportation (this revision clarifies that not all individuals utilize this service. everyone has the same needs when it comes to using public transit). For instance, example, some residents could have may prefer using their own vehicles that offer due to the greater convenience and comfort than public transportation. In addition, they have to pay substantial provide compared to public transit. These individuals also incur significant expenses for for fuel and maintenance of their vehicles. Consequently, funding public transportation through tax revenue may not be equitable for everyone. everyone (this sentence emphasizes that using tax revenue for this purpose might not be fair).

On the other hand, when considering Paul's argument, one argument has its merits but also contains a notable limitation (this phrase acknowledges that Paul's argument has some validity but also has a significant flaw). While free public transportation could be immediately found that free public transportation could potentially lead to fewer cars on the roads and cleaner air in cities, it does not guarantee a significant shift to towards public modes of transport, which means individuals would not abandon their transport (this sentence highlights the main limitation of Paul's argument). Individuals may still opt for private transportations, as private transportation could make it easier to meet individuals' personality demands transportation due to their its flexibility and personal satisfaction they provide compared to crowded public transportation.transit options (this sentence provides reasons why people might still choose private transportation).

In light of these arguments, it is crucial to consider alternative solutions that strike a balance between providing affordable access to public transportation while ensuring equitable distribution of costs among taxpayers (this sentence introduces potential solutions that address both sides' concerns). One possible approach could involve implementing targeted subsidies or discounts for specific groups such as low-income individuals or those with disabilities who rely heavily on public transit services (this sentence suggests a more targeted solution). I don't think public transportation should be supported by tax revenue. Instead, the government should look for investments in public transportation from those big companies who earn a vast amount of money. It's time for the big entrepreneurs to make contributions to the development of society. Secondly, public transportation should not be free to all. Even if the government obtains money from the big companies for public transportation, they still need money to run and maintain the public buses. In this way, I would recommend the government to set a reasonable fee for taking public transportation. Also, the fee on those elderly should be waived as they are usually retired and already live on health insurance.

In my opinion, public transportation should not be solely funded by tax revenue. Kelly claims that people should not pay tax on the public transportation because many people rarely rely on them and they could spend this money to do more meaningful things. However, Paul thinks it's a great idea because free public transportation means that fewer people would use private cars, which leads to less car emissions. From my point of view, free public transportation is a great policy. First, as Paul said, more people would choose public transportation instead of private car, which is more friendly to our environment. As a result, the air pollution would be greatly reduced. Take my hometown as an example. Last year, the government decreased the fee of public transportation. Then, the air quality had improved a lot in the city. Second, some people may think spending tax is a great burden for people. In fact, it would only cost a little money and would not cause problems.

Kelly argues that additional taxes for public transportation are unnecessary, as many individuals seldom utilize these services and could allocate their funds more effectively elsewhere. Conversely, Paul believes that free public transportation would encourage fewer private car usage, ultimately reducing vehicle emissions.

In my opinion, implementing free public transportation is a commendable policy. Firstly, echoing Paul's sentiments, an increased reliance on public transportation over private vehicles would significantly benefit the environment. This shift would lead to reduced air pollution levels, as evidenced by the improvement in air quality observed in my hometown following a decrease in public transportation fees last year.

Secondly, while some may view tax expenditures as burdensome, the financial impact of subsidizing public transportation would likely be minimal and manageable for most individuals. The potential benefits of a cleaner environment and improved public health far outweigh the relatively small monetary cost associated with this policy. (151 words)

From my perspective, it would do more harm than good if public transportation were to be supported only by tax revenue. To begin with, I wholeheartedly concur with Kelly's idea that this action can put too much burden on people especially those who seldom use public transportation. Moreover, I would like to add that free public transportation may lead to the abuse of it. Some people may tend to use public transportation when they don't really need it, increasing the demand for public transportation. People in need of public transportation may fail to enjoy the benefits from this policy as a result. Furthermore, if public transportation were to be free to all, the routes of it would need to be re-scheduled to everyone's need, which could be a giant and costly project. Governments can subsidy public transportation and give those who use transportation frequently a discount as an alternative.

In my opinion, relying solely on tax revenue to fund public transportation would create more problems than it would solve.

Firstly, I agree with Kelly's assertion that imposing an additional tax for public transportation could place an undue financial burden on individuals, particularly those who rarely utilize these services. Furthermore, I believe that offering free public transportation may inadvertently encourage its overuse. This could result in increased demand and overcrowding, ultimately disadvantaging those who genuinely rely on these services for their daily needs. Additionally, providing free public transportation to all would necessitate the restructuring of existing routes and schedules to accommodate everyone's requirements, which could prove to be a complex and expensive undertaking. As an alternative solution, governments could consider subsidizing public transportation costs and offering discounts to frequent users, thereby striking a balance between accessibility and financial sustainability.
