In most species of deer, the males have antlers. These bony, branching structures atop the animal's head begin growing in the spring and continue developing throughout the summer and fall. Starting in late winter the antlers drop off, and the cycle starts all over again in the spring. Why deer grow antlers has long been a source of speculation. Below are three theories about the function of deer antlers. First, some biologists have proposed that the antlers' main function is to help the animal dissipate excess body heat. It is thought that wind blowing through the antlers cools the blood circulating in them. Antlers contain many blood vessels while they are growing, and a large volume of blood can fill them. Consequently, the antlers allow a lot of blood to be cooled by breezes, keeping the animal from overheating. A second theory is that antlers -hard, pointy structures - evolved for defense against predators. Animals that evolved horns, a bony structure similar to antlers, clearly use them in self-defense. Just as bulls and male goats use their horns to combat would-be attackers, deer may use their antlers to defend themselves against animals that try to harm them. According to p third theory, antlers function as a signal used by male deer to communicate their dominance to each other. Specifically, large-size antlers are believed to signal superior strength. According to this theory, males with large antlers are perceived as dominant by males with smaller antlers. Signaling through antlers is supposed to prevent unnecessary fights according to the theory, when two males confront each other, the one with the smaller antlers will walk away rather than engage in a physical fight against a stronger rival.

In the reading material, the author cites three reasons to support the viewpoint that the most deers, espacially males with a antler, which grows in spring until winter is coming must have some benificial functions. First of all, the author argues that the antlers with vessels help them cooling down as well as maintain the body heat. However, the lectuerer offers an opposite stand that is it no use to grow such huge antlers in fall when temperature is not such high. Some deers in cold regin also have antlers, there is no need for cooling down. In addition, the lectuerer cast doubt on the author's another reason that the antlers are evolved for denfense, which may prevent them from being attacked by predators, demonstrating that female deers, who protect their babies and themselfves by carefully monitoring predictors without antlers. Also the predators like wolf attacks the deer that the pray can not use the antle to defend and avioid harm. Finally, the autor's third reason that antlers are able to show signal of superior strength, whith facilitates the communication of daminance. The males with small antlers will avoid unnecessary fights once they percieve such information of a large antler male. That is also objected by the lectuerer who points out that dominance estabilished will depend on the body size of deer not on big antlers.

Section Title: 6.文章修订
The reading passage presents three theories explaining the function of antlers in male deer. However, the lecture challenges these theories with counterarguments. Firstly, the reading suggests that antlers help dissipate excess body heat by allowing wind to cool the blood circulating within them. The lecturer disputes this by questioning why deer keep their antlers long after summer and why deer in hotter regions have smaller antlers compared to those in cooler regions.
Secondly, the reading posits that antlers evolved for defense against predators, similar to how horns are used by other animals. The lecturer refutes this idea by pointing out that female deer, who care for and protect their young, do not have antlers. Moreover, evidence shows that deer defend themselves against predators like wolves by kicking them rather than using their antlers.
Lastly, the reading proposes that antlers serve as a signal of dominance among male deer, with larger antlers indicating superior strength and preventing unnecessary fights. The lecturer counters this theory by mentioning observations of confrontations between male deer where the outcome is not determined by antler size; often, a deer with larger antlers will walk away without engaging in a fight. Thus, it appears that antler size does not clearly signal dominance among deer. (210 words)
