Task Overview
Reading Passage
The Great Pyramid, a 4,500-year-old stone tomb built for an ancient Egyptian king, contains chambers, which were rooms in which the body of the king and ceremonial objects could be placed. In addition to these chambers, the pyramid also contains four shafts narrow tunnels that were created in the solid stone structure as it was being built (see illustration). These shafts rise from two burial chambers and lead toward the outside of the pyramid. The four shafts are too small and placed at too steep an angle for a person to pass through them. The purpose of the shafts in the Great Pyramid is not certain, but archaeologists have several theories. One theory is that the shafts were used for ventilation to bring fresh air from outside into the pyramid. During its construction, many workers labored inside the pyramid's interior chambers, and they may have had difficulty breathing, especially because the fires they used to light their work space would have produced smoke. The shafts may have been constructed to make it easier for workers to breathe. A second theory is that the shafts were deliberately positioned in relation to stars. Scientists studying the pyramid have found that its shafts align with the positions of certain stars in the sky. At certain times in ancient Egyptian history, stars played an important role in religion; specific stars were associated with particular gods. The shafts in the king's tomb might have been built in alignment with specific stars for religious reasons. A third theory is that the shafts were intended as passageways to help the king's spirit enter the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians believed that the king's spirit would leave his body and travel to the afterlife. The ancient builders may have built the shafts as openings for the king's spirit to passthrough.

Both the reading and lecture discuss the purpose of the shafts in the Great Pyramid. While the author of the reading introduces three possible theroies-ventilation, religion, and spirit passagesway, the lecturer casts doubt on these, asserting that all these claims are unconvincing. First of all, the reading argues that the shafts are made for transiting fresh air for the workers who may suffer smoking by the lighting fire. However, the professor challenges this claim. She notes that the two lower of four shafts in Pyramid are too deep to bring air outside. Since the purpose of the shafts are similar, it should not have only two shafts for air. Secondly, according to the articles, the shafts are positioned for religious reasons, like aligning with specific stars and gods. In contrast, the lecturer points out ancient Egyption have these religion for later years aftering the Pyramid was build. Therefore, it's unlikely these sharts are made based on the stars or gods, nor the religious reasons. Lastly, while the author suggests that shafts might be opening passageways for died king's spirit because of their belief that the king's spirit could out of the body and view the afterlife, the speaker' stance is that there is no symbols show this belief. She goes on saying that other Pyramids which were built later doesn't have the opening shafts becasue of anicent Egyptians believed that spirit can travel through the wall. Thus, it indicates that the shafts are not made for the king's spirit.

Section Title: 6.文章修订
Both the reading and lecture discuss the purpose of the shafts in the Great Pyramid. While the author of the reading introduces three possible theories - ventilation, religion, and spirit passageways, the lecturer casts doubt on these, asserting that all these claims are unconvincing.
First of all, the reading argues that the shafts were made for providing fresh air to workers who may have suffered from smoke produced by lighting fires. However, the professor challenges this claim. She notes that two of the four shafts in the pyramid are too deep to bring air from outside. Since all four shafts appear to be similar in construction, it is unlikely that only two of them were designed for ventilation purposes.
Secondly, according to the article, the shafts were positioned for religious reasons, such as aligning with specific stars associated with gods. In contrast, the lecturer points out that ancient Egyptians only developed these religious associations in later years after building the pyramid. Therefore, it is unlikely that these shafts were created based on star or god alignments or for religious reasons.
Lastly, while the author suggests that shafts might serve as passageways for a deceased king's spirit due to their belief in spirits leaving bodies and entering an afterlife, the speaker disputes this notion. She goes on to say that other pyramids built later do not have open shafts because ancient Egyptians believed spirits could travel through walls without needing actual openings. Thus, it indicates that these shafts were not designed for a king's spirit to pass through. (260 words)
