The shrimping industry relies on trawls for its harvest. Trawls are huge nets that are dragged behind boats in order to catch shrimp. Other animals, like sea turtles, are often caught inside these nets and soon die without sufficient oxygen. To help reduce the number of accidental deaths among sea turtles, engineers created a Turtle Excluder Device (TED), that must now be installed in all shrimping trawls. This one simple invention has greatly reduced the number of sea turtle deaths per year for a number of reasons. First, the TED was specifically designed to help sea turtles. The TED mechanism adds a mechanical barrier in the middle of fishing nets that prevents any animal larger than ten centimeters from getting caught deep inside. Once the animal hits this metal grid, it tilts downward, providing that animal with a clear path to exit. Smaller animals, like shrimp, pass through the metal guard and get caught in the end of the trawl net, as usual. Second, in order to make sure that fishermen use the Turtle Excluder Device, the "Shrimp-Turtle Law" was passed. It states that all trawling shrimping boats must have a TED installed. There are specific organizations in charge of monitoring shrimping vessels to ensure that their TEDs are properly installed and maintained. Finally, America now tightly controls the import of shrimp. All shrimp products must come from only certified users of TEDs. Countries, companies, or fishermen who do not comply with this law are not allowed to sell their products in the US and some European countries. Since most shrimping businesses want to import their goods to as many locations as possible, they have decided to comply and install TEDs in their trawls.

Recently, there has been a debate about the cons and pros of the Turtle Excluder Device (TED) for the shrimping industry. The writer puts forth the idea that there are many benefits to the use of TEDs, and that it has decreased the number of sea turtles caught in trawls by shrimpers. However, in the listening passage, the lecturer points out that there are still serious flaws in the TEDs. First and foremost, the author of the reading states that the TED can help reduce the number of turtles caught by shrimpers. However, in the lecture, the professor states that though the use of the TEDs, turtles with small or middle size can also be caught by shrimpers. He goes on to say that this is because the metal barrier only prevents creatures larger than ten centimeters to pass through it. In addition, the writer notes that laws have been passed requiring shrimp boats to have a TED and use it properly. However, the speaker refutes this point that it is impossible for organizations to regulate the fishermen while they are fishing for shrimp and that they can just remove the TED right before putting the nets into the ocean. Furthermore, he argues that they are inclined to do this because sometimes a TED can also prevent shrimp from passing into the depths of the trawls, which decreases their profits. Finally, the author suggests that under import regulations, the shrimp sold in the US can only come from suppliers who are certified TED users. The lecturer contends that there are many boat owners who claim to be TED-certified, but, in reality, have fake documentation. The lack of consistency in TED certification from country to country allows many to deceive ports and sell their shrimp anyway. In summary, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the use of TEDs.

示例1(改进前):However, in the lecture, the professor states that though the use of the TEDs, turtles with small or middle size can also be caught by shrimpers. 示例1(改进后):However, in the lecture, the professor states that TEDs are not as effective as claimed because small and mid-sized turtles like leatherback and loggerhead turtles can still get caught in the trawls despite having a TED installed.
示例2(改进前):In summary, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the use of TEDs. 示例2(改进后):In summary, while the author argues that TEDs have significantly reduced sea turtle deaths, the lecturer casts doubt on their effectiveness by highlighting their limitations and challenges in implementation.
4.文章结构与组织 The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each point of conflict between reading and listening passages, and a conclusion. However, there is room for improvement in terms of transitions between ideas and paragraphs to enhance coherence.
Suggestions for improvement:
-
Use more transition words and phrases to connect ideas and paragraphs.
-
Make sure each paragraph focuses on a specific point and supports it with details from both the reading and listening passages.
Example 1 (Before): In addition, the writer notes that laws have been passed requiring shrimp boats to have a TED and use it properly. Example 1 (After): Furthermore, the writer notes that laws have been passed requiring shrimp boats to have a TED and use it properly, but the lecturer challenges this point by arguing that...
Example 2 (Before): The lecturer contends that there are many boat owners who claim to be TED-certified, but, in reality, have fake documentation. Example 2 (After): On the other hand, the lecturer contends that there are many boat owners who claim to be TED-certified, but in reality, they possess fake documentation due to inconsistencies in certification across countries.

Recently, there has been a debate about the pros and cons of the Turtle Excluder Device (TED) in the shrimping industry. The writer asserts that TEDs offer numerous benefits, including reducing the number of sea turtles caught in trawls. However, the lecturer in the listening passage highlights several significant flaws in TEDs.
Firstly, the author of the reading passage claims that TEDs help decrease turtle bycatch. Contrarily, the professor in the lecture explains that small and medium-sized turtles can still be caught by shrimpers due to the metal barrier only preventing creatures larger than ten centimeters from passing through it.
Additionally, the writer mentions that laws mandate shrimp boats to have a TED installed and used correctly. The speaker disputes this point by asserting that it is nearly impossible for organizations to monitor fishermen while they are fishing for shrimp, allowing them to remove TEDs before deploying their nets into the ocean. Moreover, he argues that fishermen may be inclined to do this because TEDs can occasionally prevent shrimp from entering trawl nets, consequently reducing their profits.
Lastly, the author implies that import regulations ensure shrimp sold in the US originates only from certified TED users. However, the lecturer contends that numerous boat owners falsely claim to be TED-certified with fraudulent documentation. The inconsistency in TED certification across countries enables many deceptive individuals to sell their shrimp regardless.
In summary, both the author and lecturer hold opposing views on the effectiveness and implementation of Turtle Excluder Devices within the shrimping industry. (254 words)
