Task Overview
Reading Passage
Approach-Avoidance Conflict Sometimes reaching our goals can be a stressful experience. Stress and conflict can occur when a person is both attracted by the positive qualities of the goal and discouraged by the negative qualities of the same goal. Psychologists call this the 'approach-avoidance conflict.' It occurs when people have a goal that both attracts them, making them want to 'approach' or pursue it but also frightens or discourages them, making them want to 'avoid' it. This conflict is often complex and difficult to resolve as the person's positive and negative feelings create tension, especially as the goal comes closer.
