Task Overview
Reading Passage
Evolution in Action As environments change, plants and animals also evolve and change in order to survive in their altered environments. Scientists once assumed that evolution always took place slowly, over many thousands of years, until they discovered recently that it can also happen more quickly, through a process known as evolution in action. Through evolution in action, species evolve or develop quickly in response to sudden or rapid changes to the environment. These changes, especially those occurring over the last few hundred years, are often caused by human actions that have affected the environment, resulting in rapid adaptation by some organisms.

修正后的回答(140字):
The example from the lecture demonstrates evolution in action through the adaptation of mint plants. Initially, these plants grew in grassy fields and woods with long stems standing straight up. However, when people started building houses with front lawns, mint plants began to grow there as well. The invention of the powered lawnmower led to a rapid change in the environment, as homeowners wanted to keep their grass short. Consequently, mint plants on lawns adapted by growing sideways in a flat horizontal position instead of an upright vertical one. This allowed them to avoid being cut down by lawnmower blades. This rapid adaptation, occurring within the last hundred years, is a clear example of evolution in action.
