Task Overview
Reading Passage
Overclaiming People generally like to perceive themselves as being knowledgeable. This desire may lead them to overestimate their knowledge of a particular subject area, and to claim-and actually believe--that they are knowledgeable about aspects of that subject area that they are not, in fact, knowledgeable about, this phenomenon is known as overclaiming. People are especially likely to overclaim if they feel confident about their knowledge of a particular subject area and actually possess some knowledge about it, they are then more likely to believe that they are familiar with facts, terms, and concepts that they actually know nothing about.

Well, the reading passage talks about over-claiming, and it means that the people usually over-speak their knowledge that they don't really know. The reading passage discusses overclaiming, which refers to people overstating their knowledge on a subject they are not truly familiar with.
For example, the professor gave the volunteers the basic geological knowledge, and the volunteers all know, so he gave them more knowledge about it, such as the real city name and unreal city name. For instance, after testing the volunteers' basic geographical knowledge, which they all knew, the professor provided them with a list of real and fictitious city names.
So, such as London, the volunteers know about it, but about the unreal city name Oregon and the museum, the volunteers also talk about it, so they don't really know about it. The volunteers recognized real cities like London but also claimed to know about fictitious cities like Kashmir in Oregon, which they couldn't have known since it doesn't exist.
Therefore, this is a good example that explains the over-claiming. Thus, this example effectively illustrates the concept of overclaiming.
Revised Answer (140 words):
The reading passage discusses overclaiming, which refers to people overstating their knowledge on a subject they are not truly familiar with. For instance, after testing the volunteers' basic geographical knowledge, which they all knew, the professor provided them with a list of real and fictitious city names. The volunteers recognized real cities like London but also claimed to know about fictitious cities like Kashmir in Oregon, which they couldn't have known since it doesn't exist. Thus, this example effectively illustrates the concept of overclaiming. The study demonstrates that people are more likely to overclaim their knowledge when they feel confident about a subject area and possess some knowledge about it. This tendency can lead to individuals believing they are familiar with facts, terms, and concepts that they actually know nothing about.
