Task Overview
Reading Passage
Conservation-Reliant Species Certain animal species are able to live only in a very particular kind of habitat. If that habitat is changed in some way, it may become difficult for that species to survive. If humans take action to conserve, or protect, that species, the species may become conservation-reliant; that is, it may become dependent on humans' conservation efforts for its survival. These efforts often focus on recreating and maintaining the conditions in the species' original habitat, conditions that no longer occur naturally. Such conservation efforts can help a species survive. If, however, these efforts are discontinued, the species may soon become extinct.

Revised Answer (140 words): The reading passage introduces the concept of conservation-reliant species, which are defined as animals that become dependent on human conservation efforts for their survival. Conservation efforts focus on recreating and maintaining conditions in the species' original habitats, which no longer occur naturally. The professor provides an example illustrating this concept with birds living in a forest. In an American forest, many bird species face extinction due to pigs living there and destroying their habitat. Conservationists intervene by keeping the pigs out of the forest. This program proves to be effective, as a result, the bird populations recover and thrive. However, it is challenging for conservationists to discontinue the program. If they do, the birds may face extinction once again.
