Task Overview
Reading Passage
Elation Effect When employees of a company or organization are given a higher rate of compensation or pay for their work, they may respond by doing higher quality work, or by working more quickly and accomplishing more work in the same amount of time. This is known as the elation effect . Some psychologists think the elation effect may occur as a result of positive emotions—feelings of joy or elation—that employees experience when their compensation or pay increases. The elation effect is temporary, however. Over time employees tend to return to previous levels of quality and speed.

Corrected Answer: The elation effect means that when employees are given higher pay, they may respond by producing higher quality work. The professor in the lecture used an example of a book publishing company employee. Usually, the worker's job was proofreading and checking errors in the books. The worker performed this job at a constant pace, and after some time, their payment was raised. Interestingly, their proofreading speed increased, and they even found more errors than before. However, after a month, their efficiency returned to normal. (原文中的“Allegation effects”应改为“The elation effect”,“higher quality works”应改为“higher quality work”,“company workers”应改为“company employee”,“check the error”应改为“checking errors”,“constantly pays”应改为“constant pace”,“get raise”应改为“was raised”,“get faster”应改为“increased”,“find more error”应改为“found more errors”,“get back into the normal way”应改为“returned to normal”。)
Revised Answer (140 words): The elation effect refers to the phenomenon where employees, when given higher pay, may respond by producing higher quality work and becoming more efficient. The professor illustrated this concept using the example of a book publishing company employee whose primary responsibility was proofreading and checking for errors in manuscripts. This worker maintained a constant pace in their job, but when their payment was increased, they experienced a boost in their proofreading speed and even discovered more errors than before. This improvement, however, was temporary, as their efficiency returned to its normal level after about a month. This example effectively demonstrates the elation effect and how it can temporarily enhance an employee's performance in response to increased compensation.
