Task Overview
Reading Passage
Evolutionary Loss Over time, plant and animal species adapt in response to their environments and may develop new features that are helpful in those environments. However, evolution can also involve the loss of certain features. This is known as evolutionary loss. Evolutionary loss is observed in modern members of a species when they no longer have a feature that their ancestors once had. This often occurs because a species has moved to a new environment. The once - useful feature may no longer be helpful or even necessary in the new environment and therefore diminishes over successive generations, until it eventually disappears entirely.

Original Answer: Evolutionary loss happens when one species moved to a new environment and then lost features once their ancestors have. Evolutionary loss occurs when a species moves to a new environment and loses features that their ancestors once possessed. (将句子结构调整为更自然的表达方式,同时修正时态问题。)
The professor in the lecture gave us an example of a small insect. The professor in the lecture provided an example of a small insect called the ice crawler. (在描述例子时,添加了昆虫的名称以增加细节。)
These insects once lived in a warm place, and they have wings to fly around to get flowers' pollens. These insects once lived in warm tropical forests and had wings that allowed them to fly from plant to plant, collecting pollen from flowers. (使用更具体的词汇描述昆虫的生活环境和行为。)
Over time, more and more insects come to this place and compete for food. Over time, as more insects began inhabiting these tropical forests, competition for food increased. (调整句子结构,使其更连贯。)
So their ancestors finally left this place and moved into a cold area. As a result, the ancestors of ice crawlers eventually left the tropical forests and settled in cold, icy areas. (使用更准确的词汇描述昆虫的迁移过程。)
Living in this cold area, these small insects look different due to the unnecessary of finding food and the need for store energy. In these cold environments, ice crawlers adapted by losing their wings, as flying was no longer necessary for finding food and conserving energy became crucial for survival. (使用更自然的表达方式描述昆虫在新环境中的适应过程。)
Revised Answer (140 words): Evolutionary loss occurs when a species moves to a new environment and loses features that their ancestors once possessed. The professor in the lecture provided an example of a small insect called the ice crawler. These insects once lived in warm tropical forests and had wings that allowed them to fly from plant to plant, collecting pollen from flowers. Over time, as more insects began inhabiting these tropical forests, competition for food increased. As a result, the ancestors of ice crawlers eventually left the tropical forests and settled in cold, icy areas. In these cold environments, ice crawlers adapted by losing their wings, as flying was no longer necessary for finding food and conserving energy became crucial for survival. This example illustrates how evolutionary loss can occur when species adapt to new environments and lose certain features that were once beneficial.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Evolutionary | /ˌɛvəˈluʃəˌnɛri/ | adjective | Relating to the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form. | 演化的 | The evolutionary loss of wings in ice crawlers allowed them to conserve energy and survive in cold environments. |
| Adaptation | /ˌædəpˈteɪʃən/ | noun | The process of changing to suit different conditions or a new purpose. | 适应 | Ice crawlers' adaptation to cold environments led to the loss of their wings, which were no longer necessary for finding food. |
| Inhabit | /ɪnˈhæbɪt/ | verb | To live in or occupy a place or environment. | 居住于 | As more insects began inhabiting the tropical forests, competition for food increased, forcing ice crawlers' ancestors to migrate. |
| Conserve | /kənˈsɜrv/ | verb | To protect something from harm or destruction, or to use resources carefully to avoid waste. | 保护,节约 | In their new cold environments, ice crawlers needed to conserve energy to survive, making the loss of wings a beneficial adaptation. |
