Task Overview
Reading Passage
Groupthink One process by which groups may make bad or irrational decisions is known as groupthink. Individual members of a group attempt to conform their opinions to what they believe to be the group consensus even though the result may be negative. There are many reasons why groupthink happens. These include the desire to be liked, fear of losing a job, or even not wanting to be the one employee delaying a decision that seems inevitable. These kinds of implicit pressures to conform lead group members to ultimately make decisions that each, by himself or herself, might normally not make.

Topic Development The speaker provides a coherent and well-organized response, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples. However, there is room for improvement in fully explaining the concept of groupthink and its effects on the computer company. The speaker should elaborate more on how groupthink led to the company's decision not to change the design and the negative consequences that followed. Providing more context and details will strengthen the topic development and create a more compelling response.
Original Answer: Group thinking means that individual members of groups may attempt to confront group's opinion even though the result may be negative. Groupthink occurs when individual members of a group conform to the perceived consensus, even if it leads to negative outcomes. (Changed "group thinking" to "groupthink" and rephrased the sentence for clarity) The speaker used his experience as example. The speaker provided a personal example to illustrate this concept. (Rephrased for better flow) At that time, he worked at a computer company, and he and his co-worker decided to change the exterior of their product. At first, many co-workers agreed with their proposal. However, after senior manager did not agree with this proposal, lots of their co-workers started to change their mind. And the reason why they do this is because they did not want to make bad imagination for senior manager, which may affect their chance of promotion. So that is group thinking.

The speaker provided a personal example to illustrate this concept. While working at a computer company, the speaker and a co-worker proposed changing the exterior design of their product. Initially, many colleagues supported the idea. However, when a senior manager expressed disagreement, several team members changed their stance. They did so because they feared creating a negative impression on the senior manager, which could potentially hinder their chances for promotion. This behavior exemplifies groupthink, as individuals prioritized conformity over their initial beliefs, ultimately leading to an unfavorable decision for the company.

5.Language UseOriginal Answer: Groupthink is a process by which groups may make bad or irrational decisions. In the lecture, the professor gave an example of himself working at a computer company before. He had an idea of a design makeover for the computers, because some of the customers said that they would buy more if the computers looked cooler. At this time, he had more than half of the support from the employees, but as one person said no to the idea and he was the manager, most people immediately changed their thoughts because they thought that this would jeopardize his chances of promotion inside the company. As soon as he started to feel like it was only the professor that was supporting the argument, he quit as well. This caused that in the same year, competitors pulled out a new design which attracted some possible new customers of ours, leaving us with less money to earn and less profits.
Corrected Answer: Groupthink is a process by which groups may make poor or irrational decisions. In the lecture, the professor provided an example from his experience working at a computer company. He proposed a design makeover for the computers since some customers indicated they would purchase more if the computers appeared more modern. Initially, he received support from over half of the employees; however, when a manager opposed the idea, many people quickly changed their opinions due to concerns about jeopardizing their chances for promotions within the company. Eventually, even the professor withdrew his support for the proposal. As a result, that same year, competitors introduced a new design that attracted potential customers, leading to reduced revenue and profits for the company.
(Reasons and explanations: "poor" is more natural than "bad"; "provided" is more accurate than "gave"; "proposed" is clearer than "had an idea"; "appeared more modern" is clearer than "looked cooler"; "opposed" is more accurate than "said no"; "quickly" is more natural than "immediately"; "due to concerns about" is clearer than "because they thought that"; "withdrew his support" is clearer than "quit"; "introduced" is more accurate than "pulled out"; "reduced revenue and profits" is clearer than "less money to earn and less profits")

To improve, the speaker should carefully listen to the lecture and reading materials, identify the main points, and provide a coherent and well-organized response with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples related to groupthink and its effects on decision-making in a business context.
5.Language UseOriginal: In the lecture, the professor talked about a concept called the population change groupthink (The correct term is "groupthink" as per the lecture and reading materials). It's the continual change in the number of individuals due to the biotic or abiotic factors. And the first example he used is the hours and miles. The hours fit on the miles, and one year the number of the hours is more than the other year, so the number of miles is drop dramatically because many hours eat them. And the other example he used is about the rabbit. You know the rabbit reproduce before the winter, and one year the winter is short, so the rabbit reproduce earlier than other years. So in this way, the baby rabbit can have the extra time to reproduce, so the number of rabbit increase a lot during this year.
Revised (140 words): In the lecture, the professor discussed a concept called groupthink. This phenomenon occurs when individual members of a group conform their opinions to what they believe is the group consensus, even if it leads to negative outcomes. The professor shared an example from his experience at a computer company where he and a coworker suggested giving their computers a design makeover. Initially, more than half of their colleagues supported this idea. However, after some senior managers expressed their disagreement, many supporters changed their minds due to implicit pressures to conform. Eventually, even the professor voted against his own idea. This decision led to financial losses for their company when a competitor released a new design that attracted customers. The example illustrates how groupthink can negatively impact decision-making in a business context.

4.话题发展 The speaker's response is generally coherent and well-organized, but there is room for improvement in terms of topic development. To enhance the response, the speaker should focus on providing more specific details from both the reading and listening passages to support their explanation of groupthink and its effects on the computer company. Additionally, the speaker could work on creating clearer connections between ideas to ensure a more cohesive response.
5.语言使用Original Answer: Groupthink is a situation that people tend to think the same for various reasons. Groupthink occurs when people in a group tend to have similar opinions for various reasons. (原句表达不够自然,修改后更符合英语表达习惯) In the example of the computer company, the teller's own experience says that he was working at a computer company and the outfit of their computer is not up to date. In the computer company example, the speaker's experience shows that they worked at a company where the computers' design was outdated. Revised Answer (140 words): Groupthink occurs when people in a group tend to have similar opinions for various reasons. In the computer company example, the speaker's experience shows that they worked at a company where the computers' design was outdated. Therefore, he suggested updating the computers' appearance to attract more customers. However, during the meeting, the senior manager rejected this idea due to its high cost. Subsequently, his colleagues agreed with the senior manager because they didn't want to leave a negative impression on them. This led to a unanimous decision to maintain the old design, which ultimately cost the company potential customers and profits. The example illustrates how groupthink can negatively impact decision-making, as individuals may prioritize conformity over their own opinions and ideas, resulting in suboptimal outcomes for the group as a whole.

The speaker's delivery is generally clear and fluid, with a consistent pace and only occasional pauses. However, there are some minor issues with punctuation and pronunciation that could be improved. To enhance the delivery, the speaker should focus on appropriate pauses and work on accurate pronunciation of certain words.
- Topic Development The response is coherent and well-organized, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples from the reading and listening passages. However, the speaker could improve topic development by providing more specific details from the listening passage, such as mentioning the market research results or the competitor's success in attracting customers with their new design. Additionally, the speaker should emphasize the negative consequences of groupthink in the computer company example to better illustrate its effects.
Original: The group thinking process Groupthink (use the term from the reading passage) is a decision-making process which might lead to badly rational decisions poor or irrational decisions (improve clarity and accuracy). For example, the speaker once worked in a computer company. The co-worker and the speaker decided to make the computers look cooler, but the senior manager said they should focus on technology and the cost to make it cooler was unnecessary. So half of the co-workers who supported them changed their minds, and the co-worker initially didn't want to make a bad impression on the senior manager, so he voted against him too. Later, the speaker himself thought it was not worth the time to continue voting, so he voted against himself too. Later that year, the other competitor promoted a new design of the computer and prevented the company of the speaker from alluring more new customers.
Revised (140 words): Groupthink is a decision-making process that may result in poor or irrational decisions. In the computer company example, the speaker and a coworker proposed updating their computers' design to attract more customers. However, senior management argued that focusing on technology was more important and that redesigning would be an unnecessary expense. Consequently, many coworkers who initially supported the idea changed their minds due to implicit pressures to conform. Even the speaker eventually voted against their own proposal, believing it wasn't worth prolonging the discussion. Unfortunately, this decision led to negative consequences when a competitor released a new design that attracted potential customers away from their company. This example demonstrates how groupthink can negatively impact decision-making and ultimately harm a business's success.

Topic Development The speaker provides a coherent and well-organized response, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples. However, there is room for improvement in terms of fully explaining the concept of groupthink and its effects on the computer company example. The speaker should focus on providing more detailed explanations and linking the example more explicitly to the concept of groupthink to create a stronger response.
Original: So the professor talked about his experience working in a computer company, where once him and his co-workers were talking about a new design makeover to make the product look more up-to-date, cooler, and not old-fashioned. And when they delivered this idea to other people, most people support this idea. However, one senior manager disagrees and says that functionality overs the looks. And immediately, all the people turn to the side of the higher manager, even the co-worker did. And the reason that they gave is that disagreeing with the senior manager will make their chance of getting promotion lower, not look like a team player. So in turn, the professor became the only one who voted against the decision. And that just explains what groupthink is, is where everybody was prone to one where most people vote for it, and actually it turns out to be not accurate.

Revised (140 words): The professor discussed his experience working in a computer company, where he and his co-workers proposed a new design makeover to make their products more modern and appealing. When they presented this idea, most people supported it. However, one senior manager disagreed, arguing that functionality should take precedence over appearance. Immediately, others sided with the senior manager, including the co-worker who initially supported the idea. They believed that disagreeing with the senior manager could harm their chances of promotion and make them appear less like team players. Consequently, the professor became the only one who voted against the decision. This example illustrates groupthink, which occurs when individuals conform to a perceived majority opinion, even if it may not be accurate or beneficial.

5.Language UseOriginal: Groupthink refers to a process by which a group may make negative poor ("negative" is not incorrect, but "poor" is a more suitable word choice) or irrational decisions. To illustrate this, the professor takes his own experience in a computer company as an example. Initially, he and his co-worker proposed an up-to-date design for their computers based on the market survey, demonstrating that new customers would prefer contemporary design. During the meeting, the majority of their colleagues supported it, while one senior manager opposed it due to the actual additional ("actual" is not the right word here; "additional" better conveys the meaning) and unnecessary cost created by the design. Shortly afterwards, most colleagues reversed their ideas, even including the co-worker and the professor himself. However, this decision resulted in an extremely negative situation, since their competitor created a modernized design and attracted more consumers.
Revised (140 words): Groupthink refers to a process by which a group may make poor or irrational decisions. To illustrate this phenomenon, the professor shares his experience at a computer company. He and his coworker initially proposed an updated design for their computers based on market research indicating that new customers preferred modern designs. During the meeting, most colleagues supported the idea; however, one senior manager opposed it due to additional and unnecessary costs associated with the redesign. Subsequently, many colleagues changed their stance, including the coworker and professor. Unfortunately, this decision led to significant losses as their competitor introduced a modernized design that attracted potential customers. To achieve a score of 30, this revised version uses more advanced vocabulary and maintains a natural flow of statements, smooth transitions, and a strong conclusion.

The reading passage introduced a concept called groupthink, which is a process by which groups make bad or irrational decisions. For instance, the professor mentioned working at a computer technology company. One day, he and his coworker proposed redesigning their computers to make them look more up-to-date. Initially, more than half of the group supported the idea; however, many changed their minds due to concerns about making a bad impression on senior managers and potentially jeopardizing their chances for promotion. Eventually, even the professor voted against his own idea, resulting in the company keeping the old design. Later, a competitor released a new design for their computers. This led to the company losing potential customers and market share.
