Task Overview
Reading Passage
Different species of plants growing in the same area often compete for resources that they need for survival. Certain plant species compete by producing and releasing chemicals that have an impact on nearby plants, a strategy known as chemical competition. The chemicals the plants release into the surrounding area negatively affect the growth of neighboring plants and decrease the other plants' ability to use resources effectively, reducing their chances of survival. By engaging in chemical competition, a species may be able to thrive and sometimes even completely take over an area where other plants could normally grow.

So the article talks about chemical competition, and that means that the plants can produce a chemical that would affect other nearby plants. The reading passage discusses chemical competition, which refers to plants producing chemicals that can impact nearby plants.(将句子结构进行了调整,使其更自然。)
And the professor used an example of knapweed and fast cube grasses to illustrate the idea. The professor provided an example of knapweed and fescue grass to illustrate this concept.(将“fast cube grasses”更正为“fescue grass”,以提高准确性。)
He said that knapweed dominates the area by using all of the oxygen and the nutrition, so that other plants such as fast cube grass cannot survive there. He mentioned that knapweed dominates the area by consuming all available resources, making it difficult for other plants like fescue grass to survive.(对句子进行了调整,使其更自然。)
So the scientists used a laboratory experiment to illustrate that they plant the two species together in two pods. To demonstrate this, scientists conducted a laboratory experiment in which they planted both species together in two pots.(对句子进行了调整,使其更自然。)
One is with normal soil, and the other is with soil that contains special deactive chemicals. One pot contained normal soil, while the other had soil with special deactivating chemicals.(对句子进行了调整,使其更自然。)
So in the first pod, the grass, the knapweed grow well, but the grass are really small and couldn't absorb the nutrition that they need. In the first pot, knapweed grew well, but the fescue grass was stunted and unable to absorb necessary nutrients.(对句子进行了调整,使其更自然。)
In the second pod, both of the grass and the knapweed grow fine. In the second pot, both fescue grass and knapweed grew well.(对句子进行了调整,使其更自然。)
