Doctor Diaz: Some educators think that in our global, tech-orie nted world, students need to focus on nonfiction t exts, such as news stories, technical manuals, or ot her informational materials. They say that reading poetry, novels, and short stories is not the optimal use of the limited time that students have in the c lassroom. How do you view this approach to educ ation? Should schools limit the teaching of fiction al texts in favor of teaching more practical, nonfict ion texts?
Student A
Andrew: Education has to evolve. Nowaday s there's an enormous amount of economic and political data freely available online. It's important th at students can evaluate this infor mation to understand local and w orld events in order to be good ci tizens. Reading fiction is a wonde rful hobby but school should prep are students for adult life and its responsibilities.
Student B
Claire: I spent a lot of class time in high school analyzing literature. I'm st udying to be an engineer, so l ad mit that reading fiction in school was not directly applicable to my future occupation, but it did instil l in me a love of reading, which is very valuable. I feel better equipp ed now to understand all sorts of written material.

I completely agree with Claire’s standpoint that school education should not be limited to practical contents and encouraging reading fictional text is necessary. These resources could cultivate many valuable qualities to students, such as curiosity to the world, insistence when facing challenges and creative thinking skills, which are all core competence for youngsters to achieve better academic performance. For example, the Harry Potter series of books teaches children how to collaborate with others to finish the common goal, such as a presentation or a group project; the Moon and Sixpence tells young people in confusion how to find learning field they interested in and persist devoting to it; the play King Lear written by Shakespeare can arouse students’ curiosity and passion of European history and literature. Although these fictional books can not impart some practical knowledge to students, they pass on some significant values and perfect students’ personality, which is also indispensable for students to help students learn better and adapt to the quickly developing world.
