Social Referencing A young baby is continually exposed to new situations but only later develops the ability to understand new situations and learn how to respond .Psychologists refer to this ability as"social referencing."and it does not develop until around the age of one.A child capable of social referencing looks at other people, like parents, for emotional signals that indicate what a new situation means and how the child should respond to it. Typically.the signals are facial expressions that express attitudes about the situation. While very young babies do not react to such signals. one-year-old children do seem to understand them and subsequently behave in ways that reflect the parent's atitude.

Revised Answer (140 words):
Social referencing is defined as a young baby's ability to understand and respond to new situations, which develops later in their life. In the lecture, the professor describes an experiment that demonstrates this concept. There are two groups of mothers; one group offers their six-month-old babies dolls with a smile, while the other group offers dolls with a frown. The six-month-old babies play with the dolls immediately, regardless of their mother's facial expression (smile or frown). However, when it comes to older children, their response is different. When their mothers smile and offer the dolls, the children play with the dolls immediately. But when their mothers frown while offering the dolls, the children avoid the dolls and do not play with them at all. This experiment illustrates how social referencing develops as children grow older and become more aware of emotional cues from others.
