Doctor Diaz

Our next class will focus on how companies maintain their staffing levels. While it is important for a company to look for new employees to fill open positions, many believe it is equally important for a company to retain the workers it already has on staff. In your opinion, what is the best way for a company to encourage its employees to stay at the company instead of seeking a different job elsewhere?

Paul

I think the best thing a company could do to keep its employees is to create a work environment that employees look forward to going to five days a week. Cramped office spaces or disorderly factory floors are not places I would want to spend a third of my life.

Claire

I see Paul’s point. But even more important than a nice workspace is making sure the employees don’t feel stuck in their jobs. Companies should offer opportunities for employees to advance their skills so they can get new positions within the company if they want. Employees should feel like they have a goal to work toward.

From my perspective, a good location would ensure a company's employee to stay. To be more specific, a good location means that employees can save a large amount of time on commute so that they are able to generate higher efficiency in workplaces. My experience offers a compelling example. Last summer, I worked as an internship in a finance company located in the center area in Shanghai. The excellent location allowed me to commute in several ways, including metro and buses. I only needed twenty minutes to get to company every morning. Thus, I had a breakfast every day, which made me feel energetic the whole day. Also, after work, I had more time to relax, like hanging out with friends and going to a concert. Spare time enabled me to refresh and better concentrate on the work next day. After the internship, I sent my resume to the manager to apply for a job in the company.

In my opinion, a prime location plays a crucial role in retaining employees within a company. Specifically, an accessible location allows employees to save significant time on their daily commute, leading to increased efficiency and job satisfaction. For instance, during my internship at a financial firm situated in central Shanghai, the convenient location provided me with multiple commuting options such as the metro and buses. As a result, I only needed twenty minutes to reach the office each morning, allowing me to have breakfast and feel energized throughout the day. Additionally, after work, I had ample time for leisure activities like socializing with friends or attending concerts. This personal time enabled me to rejuvenate and maintain focus on my tasks the following day. Consequently, after completing my internship, I submitted my resume to the manager in hopes of securing a permanent position within the company. (150 words)

But in fact, most people don't have as much work as they think. Many people will take time off at work to delay time. And if the company can pay attention to the needs of employees and control the workload within a reasonable time, instead of asking employees to spend unnecessary time to delay their work results, then the potential competitiveness of this company will be twice as high as that of its peers. Because the working hours are too long, the rest time of employees is getting shorter and shorter.

In response to the professor's question about retaining employees, I believe that companies should focus on providing a comfortable work environment, offering opportunities for skill development and career advancement, and implementing flexible work policies. Firstly, a pleasant workspace contributes to employee satisfaction and encourages them to stay with the company. As Paul mentioned, no one wants to spend a significant portion of their life in an uncomfortable setting.

Secondly, I agree with Claire's point that employees should be given opportunities to enhance their skills and advance within the company. This not only helps them feel valued but also fosters a sense of loyalty towards the organization. Furthermore, companies should consider adopting flexible work policies such as remote work options or adjustable schedules. This demonstrates an understanding of employees' needs outside of work and can greatly contribute to their overall satisfaction.

By addressing these factors, companies can create an environment where employees feel motivated to stay and contribute to the organization's success. (162 words)

(I rephrased this sentence to directly address the professor's question and provide a clear statement of my opinion.) Firstly, a pleasant workspace contributes to employee satisfaction and encourages them to stay with the company. (I replaced "comfortable" with "pleasant" for better word choice.) As Paul mentioned, no one wants to spend a significant portion of their life in an uncomfortable setting. (I kept this sentence as it was.)

In response to Doctor Diaz's question, I concur with Paul's notion that a company should prioritize enhancing the overall work environment, including both physical and intangible aspects. Most employees spend a significant portion of their lives in the workplace, often leading sedentary lifestyles. For instance, consider working at a tech company where one spends an entire day coding; the anticipated highlights after work might include grabbing a drink, going for a run, or taking a relaxing shower. If the company provides well-equipped facilities such as a café bar, gym, or small park within the premises, employees can enjoy these services without leaving the building. Moreover, even when faced with challenging tasks or difficult colleagues, an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable workspace can alleviate negative emotions and contribute to overall job satisfaction. Consequently, employees are less likely to seek alternative employment opportunities. While acquiring new skills is beneficial for personal growth and career advancement, investing in an improved work environment proves to be an efficient and effective strategy for employee retention. Admittedly, the suggestions Paul and Claire offer will take some effect. However, they do not see the basic needs of employees. From my perspective, the most effective method is increasing their salaries. Because it is known to us that in today's highly competitive society, there are more avenues where we should spend our money than the past. Take young employees as an example. They must pay the costly bills for their future life like the marriage and their children's education. For example, they must send their children to the best private school and the best tutoring classes for better education. Therefore, they are likely to be worried about some financial burden and prefer to work for a company providing them with more salaries. If the company does so, they are able to solve a lot of problems in their life and have a positive attitude towards their work and life so that they will not resign for another company. In summary, increasing the salaries will turn out to be effective.

The essay addresses the specific requirements of the task by expressing an opinion on how companies can encourage employees to stay. However, it could be improved by acknowledging Paul and Claire's suggestions more explicitly before presenting the alternative viewpoint on salary increases. Additionally, providing more concrete examples or evidence to support the argument would strengthen the essay.

Example 1: "In addition to Paul's suggestion of a comfortable work environment and Claire's idea of skill advancement opportunities, I believe that increasing employees' salaries is crucial for retaining them."

Example 2: "Research has shown that competitive salaries are one of the top factors influencing employee retention, as it directly impacts their financial stability and overall satisfaction."

4.Essay structure and organization

The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it could benefit from clearer transitions between ideas and paragraphs to improve coherence.

Example 1: "While Paul suggests creating a pleasant work environment and Claire emphasizes skill advancement opportunities, I believe that offering competitive salaries is the most effective way to retain employees."

Example 2: "In summary, although creating a comfortable workspace and providing opportunities for growth are important factors in employee retention, increasing salaries should be considered as a primary strategy for companies aiming to maintain their staffing levels."

6.Revised Essay

While Paul suggests creating a pleasant work environment and Claire emphasizes skill advancement opportunities, I believe that offering competitive salaries is the most effective way to retain employees. In today's highly competitive society, individuals face increasing financial pressures, such as housing costs, marriage expenses, and children's education. Consequently, employees are more likely to prioritize higher salaries when considering job satisfaction and stability.

Take young professionals as an example. They often have to bear the burden of student loans while planning for future life events like weddings and raising a family. Providing competitive salaries can alleviate these financial concerns and foster a positive attitude towards their work, making them less likely to seek employment elsewhere.

Furthermore, research has shown that competitive salaries are one of the top factors influencing employee retention, as it directly impacts their financial stability and overall satisfaction. Companies that prioritize fair compensation will not only retain their current workforce but also attract new talent in the process.

Therefore, although creating a comfortable workspace and providing opportunities for growth are important factors in employee retention, increasing salaries should be considered as a primary strategy for companies aiming to maintain their staffing levels. (196 words)

While I understand Paul's viewpoint that companies should create comfortable and inviting work environments for employees, I concur with Claire's perspective that it is crucial for employees to feel engaged in their work. As Claire mentioned, corporations should assist employees in enhancing essential skills, such as time management, avoiding multitasking, and prioritizing tasks based on urgency. However, employees can only acquire these skills if they are provided with opportunities to do so. In addition to Claire's suggestions, I propose that companies could increase and enhance their salary or bonus structures to ignite passion and enthusiasm among employees. Specifically, a competitive and rewarding salary package may encourage employees to work harder and even put in extra hours, generating additional profits and benefits for the company. Conversely, such passion may never be attained if employees do not feel adequately compensated. Therefore, without a doubt, I support Claire's standpoint that fostering employee engagement takes precedence over merely improving working conditions. (162 words)

While I find both Claire and Paul have made compelling arguments regarding the manners of companies to retain employees, I am firmly of the opinion that the best way is to offer a clear path for advancement to senior-level positions. To be more specific, a company should have more structure to help manage its team and follow established procedures with responsibilities divided between multiple departments. For instance, new employees may feel that they have less influence on daily operations, but companies offer a clear path for advancement to senior-level positions, often based on seniority and performance. As for the view provided by Pual, I perceive a somewhat limitation within his argument. To elaborate, a company that provides a good environment don’t always provide a good salary. However, companies with clear career development opportunities typically operate under a steady flow of income.

Title: 6 文章修订

While both Claire and Paul present valid points regarding employee retention strategies, I firmly believe that offering a clear path for career advancement is the most effective approach. Specifically, companies should establish structured management systems and well-defined procedures, with responsibilities distributed across various departments. By doing so, new employees may initially feel they have limited influence on daily operations; however, a transparent progression plan based on seniority and performance can alleviate such concerns.

Paul's argument, while important, has certain limitations. A pleasant work environment does not necessarily guarantee competitive salaries or long-term job satisfaction. On the other hand, companies that prioritize career development opportunities often operate with a stable revenue stream, enabling them to provide better financial incentives to their employees.

In addition to Claire's suggestion of skill advancement opportunities, companies should also consider implementing mentorship programs and continuous learning initiatives. These efforts can further empower employees to grow within the organization and contribute more effectively to its success. Ultimately, fostering a culture of professional growth and development will encourage employees to remain loyal to the company and reduce turnover rates. (184 words)

In my opinion, I agree with Paul that the most effective way for companies to retain employees is by improving their working conditions and creating a more attractive and comfortable environment. Job satisfaction is directly associated with the working environment, which means that enhancements in areas such as office spaces, restrooms, and even dining facilities can significantly increase employees' enjoyment and comfort.

Specifically, by redesigning and enhancing the working environment, such as providing a variety of snacks in the break room, replacing chairs with comfortable couches, and expanding employees' workspaces, companies can significantly increase job satisfaction and convince workers to stay. While I acknowledge Claire's point that offering opportunities for skill development is important, it can also be impractical and costly for companies. Managers would need to invest time and resources in searching for suitable courses or instructors.

Therefore, while offering opportunities for skill development may be attractive to employees, focusing on improving the working environment remains a more feasible approach for companies aiming to retain their workforce. By prioritizing employee comfort and satisfaction through workplace enhancements, companies can create an environment where employees are more likely to remain loyal and committed. (193 words)

Admittedly, the opinion about improving the working enviornment makes sense, but many small companies are unable to make improvements on their office standard due to their poor financial condition, making this suggestion unreliable. However, by providing employees with motivation on working, this can help to settle down the issue of leaving workers as well as improving their productivity. Firms can send their workers to education programs or fellow institutions to provide them the approach of learning practical problem solving skills and specific knowledge on relavent fields. Taking myself as an example, once I worked in a relatively small law firm. My mentor houghtfully sent me to a program which taught me much techniques on arranging programs,, and told me that it's possible for me to rise to a higher position if I perform well. The two-month internship really influenced my impression on working and I set up my mind to take the post in their firm. To sum up, I think it's considerate for firms to motivate workers with higher positions and educational programs, for this can harness their positive emotion towards the firm and lead to a more prosperous future.
