Let’s discuss how teachers’ job performance is assessed or evaluated. Regular evaluations of teachers help to ensure that students receive high-quality instruction, that good teachers are rewarded, and that struggling teachers receive help to improve. But what is the best way to evaluate teachers? Should teachers be evaluated based on their students’ test scores? Should more-experienced teachers evaluate less-experienced teachers? Should students’ feedback be considered? Which approach is best, and why?
Andrew
I think experienced senior teachers are the best source of information for teacher evaluations. School leaders can assign experienced teachers to observe their fellow teachers periodically during class, and these senior teachers can then provide feedback on their colleagues’ performance. An experienced teacher has the knowledge to determine what other teachers are doing well and what needs improvement.
Kelly
I’m not convinced that any one person’s occasional visits to a classroom would provide accurate information. I’d like a more objective, fairer source of data, so I’d prefer to rely on test scores to inform teacher evaluations. If all students take the same test, and some classes perform better than others, then we know which teachers have been most successful.

While I appreciate both viewpoints mentioned by Andrew and Kelly, I tend to say that the best way to evaluate a teacher should base on students' feedback. It should be kept in mind that students are who the teachers are trying to talk to, so students' feelings play an important role in determining whether the courses are well-conducted. If students' feedback is generally positive, it means that they are quite satisfied with the courses, and that is the main purpose for teachers to conduct classes. Meanwhile, Kelly contends that students' scores of the same test could reflect the teaching quality of teachers from different sections, but she did not mention that students' initial ability varies, which will also lead to distinct test scores. Consequently, the students' test scores cannot show how student get improved after taking the course, hence cannot determine the teaching quality.

3. Task completeness
The essay addresses the specific requirements of the task quite well, as it expresses and supports an opinion that is different from those presented in the reading passage. However, there is room for improvement in elaborating on the viewpoint and providing more concrete examples to support the argument.
Suggestions for improvement:
-
Provide specific examples of how students' feedback can be collected and used effectively.
-
Discuss potential limitations of relying solely on students' feedback and suggest ways to overcome them.
Examples:
- "For instance, schools could implement anonymous online surveys where students rate their teachers on various aspects such as clarity of explanations, classroom management, and availability for extra help."
- "While there might be concerns about students being biased or not taking the feedback process seriously, combining their input with other evaluation methods like peer observations or test scores could help create a more comprehensive assessment."
4. Essay structure and organization
The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it could benefit from better organization within paragraphs to ensure that each point is well-developed with supporting details.
Suggestions for improvement:
-
Use clear topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph to introduce the main idea.
-
Provide more explicit transitions between ideas within paragraphs.
Examples:
- Instead of starting with "Meanwhile," consider using a topic sentence like "Although test scores may seem like an objective measure of teacher performance, they have limitations."
- To improve transitions within paragraphs, you could write something like "Furthermore, considering students' diverse backgrounds and learning needs can help paint a more accurate picture of a teacher's effectiveness."

In considering the perspectives presented by Andrew and Kelly, I believe that incorporating students' feedback is the most effective method for evaluating teacher performance. It is crucial to remember that teachers are primarily addressing their students, and therefore, the students' perceptions and experiences are vital in determining the success of a given course. When students provide predominantly positive feedback, it indicates a high level of satisfaction with the instruction they have received, which ultimately reflects the teacher's effectiveness. While Kelly argues that standardized test scores can reveal differences in teaching quality across various classes, she fails to account for disparities in students' initial abilities, which can also contribute to variations in test results. As such, these scores may not accurately demonstrate improvement resulting from a specific teacher's instruction and should not be solely relied upon for evaluating teaching quality. (144 words)

In response to the discussion on teacher evaluations, I concur with Kelly's perspective that utilizing students' test scores as a primary metric for assessing teachers is a more objective and fair approach. Relying solely on peer evaluations by experienced teachers may introduce bias and inaccuracy, as personal relationships could potentially influence the feedback provided. Furthermore, occasional classroom observations might not accurately capture the overall effectiveness of a teacher's instructional methods.
On the other hand, students' test scores offer a quantifiable measure of a teacher's impact on their learning outcomes. High-performing classes would likely indicate effective teaching strategies, while lower scores could signal areas for improvement. This data-driven approach can provide valuable insights into teaching quality and help schools identify areas where additional support or professional development may be needed. However, it is essential to recognize that test scores should not be the sole criterion for evaluating teachers; incorporating multiple sources of information such as student feedback and self-assessments can create a more comprehensive understanding of a teacher's performance. In response to the professor's question, I firmly support the notion that less-experienced teachers should be evaluated by their more-experienced counterparts. Experienced educators possess a wealth of knowledge and insight, enabling them to effectively assess the performance of their peers. Additionally, incorporating student feedback into evaluations is crucial, as students possess unique perspectives on their own learning experiences. For instance, a friend of mine struggled with a teacher's prescribed problem-solving method but found success through an alternative approach. While Kelly contends that data-driven evaluations offer objectivity, it is important to recognize that test scores do not encapsulate the entirety of a teacher's effectiveness. Ultimately, I believe that evaluations conducted by experienced educators provide a more comprehensive assessment of teaching quality. (124 words)

In my opinion, evaluating teachers based on their students' test scores is not an accurate measure of their performance. Instead, I agree with Andrew's suggestion that more-experienced teachers should evaluate less-experienced ones to help them improve their teaching skills. Firstly, students' test scores do not necessarily reflect a teacher's effectiveness, as various factors can influence a group of students' performance. Furthermore, sharing students' scores may negatively impact their confidence and potentially lead to psychological issues. Therefore, I do not endorse this approach.
On the other hand, evaluations conducted by both experienced and novice teachers can provide valuable insights into teaching methods and areas for improvement. Schools could organize monthly evaluation activities where teachers observe and assess each other's classes in a collaborative manner. This approach fosters professional growth and encourages continuous development among educators. In conclusion, I support teacher evaluations conducted by their peers but oppose basing assessments solely on students' test scores. (158 words)

Because different students have different foundations, students who start to study with high foundations will be more likely to get a higher score on the exam, regardless of their teachers' abilities. In this case, students' scores are too unstable to be used to evaluate teacher's performance, which teachers' classes with more high-intelligence students will have a greater possibility of getting a higher grade in the evaluation. Section Title: Evaluating Teachers' Job Performance
In my opinion, the most effective method for evaluating teachers is through their students' feedback, as opposed to relying on students' test scores or assessments from more experienced teachers. Students spend a significant amount of time with their teachers, allowing them to develop a comprehensive understanding of their educators' methods and approaches. Feedback gathered from an extended period of observation and interaction provides the most objective means of assessing a teacher's performance.
For example, at my school, all teachers are evaluated based on student feedback. My teacher Lily has been instructing our class for three years, and her gentle, patient teaching style and extensive knowledge have left a lasting impression on us. In contrast, the high school adjacent to mine evaluates teachers based on students' test scores. However, this approach does not account for varying academic foundations among students; those who begin with stronger foundations are more likely to achieve higher scores regardless of their teachers' abilities. Consequently, using test scores as an evaluation metric is unstable and may unfairly favor educators with higher-achieving students.
Furthermore, evaluations conducted by senior teachers may not accurately reflect less-experienced instructors' true capabilities. Knowing they are being assessed by more experienced colleagues could lead these teachers to perform better than usual during evaluations, resulting in biased feedback. Therefore, utilizing student feedback as the primary means of evaluating teachers offers the most objective and accurate representation of their performance in the classroom. (243 words)

In my opinion, utilizing test scores as the primary method for evaluating teachers is the most effective approach. Firstly, as Kelly mentioned, having students take standardized tests provides an objective means of assessing teachers' performance. By comparing the results of different classes, schools can identify which educators are excelling in their instruction. This method is also efficient since schools can quickly analyze test scores to determine the quality of teaching, unlike relying on student feedback which may be time-consuming and involve filtering out irrelevant information.
However, it is essential not to overlook the value of experienced teachers' insights when evaluating their less-experienced colleagues. While this approach may be more subjective, it offers valuable feedback on specific areas that need improvement and can contribute to professional development. Despite its merits, relying solely on senior teachers' observations may not provide a comprehensive assessment of teaching quality.
In conclusion, using test scores as a primary evaluation tool offers an objective and efficient means of assessing teacher performance. Nevertheless, incorporating input from experienced educators can further enhance the evaluation process by providing targeted feedback for improvement. A balanced approach that combines both methods would likely yield the most accurate and useful results in evaluating teacher effectiveness. (205 words)

A good senior teachers can evalute younger teachers based both objective indicators like tests scores as well as subjective factors including lecturing styles and feedack from students. Besides, they can give valuable advice that deepens less-experienced teachers' understanding of teaching. For instance, during the Physics experiment courses in many colleges, there will be a less-experienced teacher as well as a senior teacher to guide the lab hours. While the younger teacher is guiding students to conduct experiments, the senior one will evaluate their ways of instructing students to use different instruments as well as nurture scientific spirits. With rich experiences in lab cources, senior teachers can figure how less-experienced teachers can propel the course more smoothly and safely, which is also inline with the ultimate goal of teacher evaluation. Therefore, I strongly advocate that teacher evaluation should be conducted by experienced senior teacher assessing younger teachers.

In my opinion, a comprehensive evaluation of teachers can only be achieved by combining the three methods mentioned.
While learning is not solely about pursuing high scores, it is essential to recognize that fostering cooperation and social maturity in students is equally important. Academic performance, as reflected in test scores, can indicate the effectiveness of a teacher's instruction. However, experienced senior teachers can assess teaching methods more holistically, determining whether a teacher successfully sparks students' curiosity and promotes genuine understanding rather than mere memorization. Thus, integrating both approaches would be more suitable.
Furthermore, students' feedback should not be disregarded since they are the primary recipients of instruction. Their input can offer valuable insights into a teacher's abilities and reveal what students have gained beyond textbook knowledge. For instance, feedback may highlight how a teacher has taught a student to resolve conflicts effectively.
In order to nurture well-rounded students, it is crucial for teachers to be evaluated from multiple perspectives. This comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects of their performance are considered and ultimately leads to better educational outcomes for their students. (186 words)
