Doctor Diaz

Our current unit looks at tourism and the benefit it has on a country’s economy. Many argue that while tourism can indeed be a money-making endeavor, it can do more harm than good, especially tourism to small, remote places that are not heavily populated. What is your opinion? Should local or national governments promote tourism to remote regions not typically visited by tourists before? Why?

Andrew

Tourism has always been a lucrative business. Improving the economies of these rural regions, especially if those regions are poor, can only have a positive effect. People can have a better quality of life by showcasing their food and traditions to the outside world. It’s a chance the people might not get without promotion from the government.

Claire

I don’t think governments should promote tourism to remote regions. The people are likely not asking for this kind of industry or for this kind of attention. Instead, governments should develop other means of improving a region's economic situation, like expanding agriculture or other industries. These efforts will have a stronger, more permanent impact on the region than bringing in groups of tourists.

Admittedly, I agrre with Andrew that tourism is a sunstantial way to promote ecnomics. Because with tourists flooding in, agricultrual products are selling out which greatly improves the life of local people. However, I doubt that the following results outweigh the economical profits. In my opinion, remote regions should not rely on tourism for development. For one thing, the ecosystems in mountains and villages are frigile, and too many tourists contributes to environment pollution which cannot be reversed in a long time. For another, remote regions often accommadate a small population and they live in a harmony. The boost of tourism is likely to disturb their peaceful life. Therefore, I think tourism is not the best choice for remote regions.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

While I acknowledge Andrew's perspective that tourism can significantly contribute to a region's economic growth, I believe that promoting tourism in remote areas may not be the most sustainable approach. Indeed, an influx of tourists can boost local agricultural sales and improve the quality of life for residents. However, potential negative consequences should also be considered. Fragile ecosystems in remote regions could suffer irreversible damage due to increased pollution and human activity. Additionally, these areas often have small populations living harmoniously, and a sudden surge in tourism might disrupt their peaceful existence. Consequently, I argue that alternative development strategies should be explored for remote regions rather than relying solely on tourism. (116 words)

The essay does a good job of addressing the task requirements, expressing a clear opinion, and contributing to the discussion. However, there is room for improvement in elaborating on the viewpoint and providing more specific examples or details to support the argument. To enhance the essay, consider discussing potential drawbacks of promoting tourism in remote regions, as well as addressing Claire's concerns about alternative means of improving a region's economic situation.

Example 1: "While promoting tourism can bring economic benefits, it is important to consider potential negative impacts on the environment and local communities. For instance, increased tourist traffic may lead to pollution or overuse of natural resources."

Example 1: "One significant advantage of promoting tourism in remote regions is the improvement in infrastructure that often accompanies such efforts."

6 Revised Essay

Andrew's perspective is valid when considering that promoting tourism to remote regions benefits both the local economies and the life quality of individuals. Furthermore, I would like to emphasize that flourishing tourism not only enhances the fundamental facilities of the region but also contributes to the spread of cultures and customs.

Firstly, since governments want to attract more people to visit the place, they need to complete the highways or railways to these remote regions. These improvements in infrastructure allow local people to travel to other places, greatly improving their commuting experience.

Secondly, in order to promote tourism, governments could build museums with exhibitions displaying the history of the area, which can also serve as education for local people. These exhibitions enable visitors from diverse backgrounds to gather together and exchange insights, greatly inspiring learning passion. Therefore, promoting education in this area helps preserve cultural heritage and traditions.

From my perspective, it is not advisable for government to promote tourism to remote regions. Although the strategy could have some positive impacts on increasing revenue, like what Andrew suggests, I believe that the drawbacks might outweigh the advantages. This is because first and foremost, when it comes to develop a region, it is more reasonable to consider what is appropriate for it based on its unique characteristics and specific needs, instead of taking tourism as the only way to become prosper. In addition, remote areas are usually of poor eco-system, leading to a fragile natural environment. For example, there are some island with volcanoes that is quite remote and full of beautiful sceneries, making it perfect for tourism, however the animals and plants could not bare living with too many people. Thus, it is likely to be destroyed by the over development resulted from tourism. Therefore, I strongly hold the opinion that government should not bring tourism to remote regions.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

In my opinion, promoting tourism to remote regions by local or national governments is not a prudent approach. While tourism may generate revenue, as Andrew suggests, I believe the potential drawbacks outweigh the benefits. A more reasonable strategy for developing a region would be to consider its unique characteristics and specific needs, rather than solely relying on tourism for prosperity. Furthermore, remote areas often possess delicate ecosystems and fragile natural environments. For instance, certain remote islands with volcanic landscapes may offer picturesque scenery ideal for tourism; however, their native flora and fauna may not be able to withstand an influx of visitors. Consequently, these environments could suffer irreparable damage due to overdevelopment resulting from tourism. Hence, I firmly maintain that governments should refrain from introducing tourism to remote regions. (134 words)

Section Title: The Impact of Tourism on Rural Regions

In my opinion, promoting tourism in rural areas can significantly contribute to the improvement of the local quality of life and provide the necessary resources to address environmental concerns.

Specifically, fostering tourism in rural regions attracts visitors who are likely to spend money on local products and experiences, thereby creating job opportunities for residents. For instance, an agricultural village might establish a garden where visitors can participate in fruit-picking activities, which would be particularly appealing to urban dwellers. This approach not only generates income for the local community and government but also allows them to allocate a portion of the revenue towards mitigating any pollution caused by tourism.

Admittedly, some argue that rural areas should remain untouched to prevent environmental issues from arising. However, it is essential to recognize that residents in these regions have the right to pursue prosperity while maintaining a clean environment. With sufficient financial resources generated through tourism, they will be better equipped to address potential environmental challenges effectively. (172 words)

In my opinion, promoting tourism in remote areas without careful consideration may cause more harm than good. I wholeheartedly agree with Claire's argument that the desires of local residents should be taken into account. If the people in these regions are not interested in tourism, government promotion will be less effective and potentially counterproductive.

Furthermore, successful tourism relies on having attractions that appeal to visitors and stimulate economic growth. However, many remote areas may lack such attractions. Additionally, a positive travel experience often depends on convenient transportation and well-developed infrastructure, which some rural regions might not possess. For instance, during a trip to rural areas around my hometown last summer, I encountered poor water and electricity supply, which significantly hindered my enjoyment of the journey.

In conclusion, governments should not blindly promote tourism in rural areas. Instead, they must prioritize adapting their strategies to suit local conditions and preferences while exploring alternative methods for economic development such as expanding agriculture or other industries. This approach will likely yield more sustainable and positive outcomes for these regions. (179 words)
