Understanding Score Requirements Across University Tiers
TOEFL score requirements vary significantly depending on a university's selectivity, program type, and location. Top-20 US universities such as Stanford, MIT, and Columbia typically require an overall Band of 5.0 or higher, while many state universities and regional colleges accept scores in the 3.5–4.0 range. UK Russell Group universities generally fall between 4.5 and 5.5, with Oxford and Cambridge at the higher end.
Beyond the overall band, pay attention to section-minimum policies. Many graduate programs — especially in STEM and business — set individual section floors (e.g., "no section below 4.0"). A strong overall band does not guarantee admission if one section falls short. This checker flags exactly those gaps so you can target your preparation.
Universities also differ in how they handle conditional admission. Some offer provisional acceptance with a requirement to reach the target score before enrollment; others accept students into an English pathway program first. Knowing which category your target school falls into can inform whether you should retake the test or apply with your current score and plan to improve during a bridge program.
When building your school list, aim for a mix of score tiers: two or three programs where your score comfortably exceeds the minimum ("Safer"), three where you meet the requirement ("Match"), and one or two aspirational programs where you are slightly below ("Reach"). Use the School Finder to explore universities at each tier.
