Understanding Safer / Match / Reach

Labels are assigned based on your score relative to the school's published overall minimum. They help you quickly classify schools into a balanced application list.

Safer

Score > minimum + 0.5

You clearly exceed the requirement. Low risk of failing the English proficiency threshold.

Match

Score = minimum to minimum + 0.5

You meet or narrowly exceed the requirement. A solid application that satisfies the threshold.

Reach

Score < minimum (within 1.0 band)

Below the minimum but within reach. Worth targeting if you can improve before your test date.

Labels are based on the published overall minimum only. Many schools also publish section minimums. Use the University Requirement Checker to verify full requirements including section scores.

Move schools from Reach to Match

If your target school is a Reach, closing the gap is achievable with focused preparation. LingoLeap's mock tests and AI feedback are built for exactly this.

Building a Balanced University List

A well-constructed university list balances ambition with pragmatism. Admissions counselors consistently recommend a 2-3-2 ratio: two Safer schools where your TOEFL band clearly exceeds the minimum, three Match schools where you meet or slightly exceed the requirement, and two Reach schools where your score falls just below the published threshold.

Safer schools are not backup plans — they are programs you would be happy to attend, where the language requirement is comfortably within your range. Having two Safer options gives you negotiating leverage on financial aid and removes the stress of waiting for Reach decisions. Match schools form the core of your list. Your score meets their stated minimum, and the rest of your application (GPA, essays, recommendations) is competitive. This is where most admitted students end up.

Reach schools are aspirational but realistic. If your TOEFL band is within 0.5 of the requirement, a strong application can sometimes compensate — especially if the university offers conditional admission or an English pathway program. Some programs also consider superscore policies, where they take the highest section score across multiple test sittings.

Use the school finder above to sort universities by tier, then cross-reference with the Requirement Checker to verify section-level requirements for each program on your list.

Frequently Asked Questions

These labels are based on your score relative to the published minimum. Safer means your score exceeds the minimum by more than 0.5 band. Match means you meet or narrowly exceed the minimum (within 0.5). Reach means your score is below the minimum but within 1.0 band — the school is a stretch target but still worth considering if you can close the gap.
