As I mentioned in class, governments make public policies to describe their responses to various problems that affect a community. Part of this process involves setting and defending priorities about which issues deserve the most attention and resources. For example, governments need to decide whether they should spend more money on education or on environmental protections. If you were a policy maker, which issue would you argue is more important—education or environmental protections? Why?
Student A
Kelly:We all live on planet Earth, and it is the only planet we have. Therefore, we must take care of it, Clearly, protecting the environment should be the government’s priority over education. I think the REAL question is, which approach to protecting the environment—restricting pollution, regulating pollution, promoting clean energy, or something else—should be the government’s priority?
Student B
Andrew:I disagree with Kelly that the environment is more important than education. Education is actually the best way to protect the environment. Educated people can see how their decisions affect the world around them. Also, with better science and technology education, we can develop solutions to environmental problems. Therefore, I think the government should spend more money on education.

While I can see Kelly’s point that it is government’s priority to protect environment, I agree with Andrew’s perspective that educating people how to protect the environment would be a better option for the government. As mentioned by Andrew, by learning knowledge about science and technology, people can develop scientific and systematic methods for protecting environment. When having biology classes, students would be informed of information about the causes, including various ways resulting in an increased carbon dioxide emissions, of climate change, which enables them to come up with better solutions to save the Earth, especially inventing a new energy resources to replace fossil fuels to use; however, these methods will not be approachable if the government only focuses on protecting environment. Apart from what Andrew has raised, I add that supporting individuals to get education would have a long-term positive effect on environmental protection. By being well aware of the specific behaviors that would have negative impacts on environment such as burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees and so on, people would automatically avoid doing so in their lives and even encourage their children to cycle more; on the contrary, the society which hones in on protecting the environment may not get these benefits. Therefore, it is essential for government to spend more money on education rather than on environmental protection.

-
在引用学生A和学生B的观点时,可以这样写:“Kelly believes that environmental protection should be the priority because it is our responsibility to take care of the planet, while Andrew argues that education is more important as it can help people develop solutions to environmental problems.”
-
在支持自己观点时,可以提供一个具体的例子:“For instance, by investing in education, governments can ensure that future generations are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle environmental challenges such as climate change and pollution.”

Section Title: Balancing Education and Environmental Protection
While I can appreciate Kelly's argument that the government should prioritize environmental protection, I concur with Andrew's viewpoint that focusing on education is a more effective approach. As Andrew highlights, fostering knowledge in science and technology equips individuals with the tools to develop innovative and systematic methods for safeguarding the environment. For instance, through biology classes, students gain insights into the causes of climate change, such as increased carbon dioxide emissions. This understanding enables them to devise sustainable solutions, including alternative energy sources to replace fossil fuels. However, these strategies would be unattainable if the government solely concentrates on environmental protection.
In addition to Andrew's points, I contend that investing in education yields long-term benefits for environmental conservation. By understanding the specific actions that negatively impact the environment—such as burning fossil fuels or deforestation—people are more likely to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives and instill these values in future generations. Conversely, a society fixated on protecting the environment without addressing education may not reap these advantages. Consequently, it is crucial for governments to allocate greater resources towards education rather than exclusively focusing on environmental protection. (194 words)
