Let's focus now on two proposals that governments canconsider as they try to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cars. One proposal is to improve and expand public transportation. The other is toprovide financial support to companies that make electric cars and toconsumers who buy them. Which proposal do you think is better? Why?
claire
I think improving public transportation would be more beneficial overall thangiving tax breaks or rebates to particular companies and consumers. If takinga train or a bus is significantly easier, cheaper, and faster than driving a carmore people will want to use public transportation. With fewer cars on theroad, there will be less air pollution.
paul
I believe that providing financial support to electric-car manufacturers anoconsumers is the better innovative long-term strategy. Many people live inrural areas, and they need their own vehicles to get around. These peoplewould not benefit from, say, more train lines being built in a far-off city.

I agree with paul that financial support for electric car companies would be better. However, I have my own reasons for this opinion, namely that electric car investment would be more effective in the present that increasing public transport. Perhaps it is a little hard to understand this, so let me elaborate. Right now, there are already a lot of very good electric cars in the market, for example tesla's cars, and imporving the efficiency of those cars would be cheaper than building, say, a new interstate train. In addition, by using all electric vehicles, there will be no pollution from those cars, on the other hand, ost public transport are still reliant on gas, making them inferior compared to all clean vehicles. As to Claire's point about how more people will use publuc transportation, this is not realistic. Cars are a show of status in today's world, much like how the old aristocracy showed their esteem by riding horse carriages. Therefore, people might be reluctant to use public transportation, on the other hand, electric cars can be symbolic to the future, so people will be motivated to buy them.

In light of the ongoing debate on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from gasoline-powered cars, I concur with Paul's stance that providing financial support to electric car manufacturers and consumers is the superior approach. However, my reasoning stems from the belief that investing in electric vehicles would yield more immediate results compared to expanding public transportation.
To elucidate my perspective, consider the current availability of high-quality electric vehicles, such as Tesla's offerings. Enhancing the efficiency of these cars would likely be more cost-effective than constructing new interstate train lines. Furthermore, by transitioning to an all-electric vehicle fleet, we could eliminate vehicular pollution entirely. In contrast, most public transportation systems continue to rely on fossil fuels, rendering them less environmentally friendly than their electric counterparts.
Addressing Claire's argument that increased public transportation usage would lead to reduced pollution, I contend that this notion is somewhat idealistic. Automobiles often serve as status symbols in contemporary society, akin to how horse-drawn carriages represented prestige among aristocrats in bygone eras. Consequently, individuals may be hesitant to embrace public transit options. Conversely, electric vehicles embody a forward-thinking mindset and could inspire consumers to adopt this eco-friendly alternative willingly. (196 words)
