Nurse Plants Young, developing plants are typically weaker than mature plants. Especially in harsh environments, young plants may be vulnerable to damage, and some resources they need for growth and survival may not be plentiful. In such cases, young plants may benefit from growing near certain older, more developed plants of another species that help them. Mature plants that serve this role are known as nurse plants . Nurse plants support the growth of young plants by providing shelter that protects the young plants from environmental threats. An additional benefit is that nurse plants supply resources that the young plants need to survive.

修改后的回答(140字):
The professor's lecture illustrates the concept of nurse plants through the example of the Palo Verde tree and a certain type of cactus in the desert environment. The young cactus, which is vulnerable to harsh conditions such as strong sunlight and nutrient-poor soil, benefits from growing near the Palo Verde tree. The tree provides shade, protecting the cactus from direct sunlight and preventing rapid evaporation in the top layers of soil. This helps the cactus stay cooler and maintain access to water. Additionally, fallen leaves from the Palo Verde tree decompose and enrich the soil with nutrients, further supporting the growth and survival of the cactus. This symbiotic relationship between the Palo Verde tree and the cactus exemplifies how nurse plants can aid in the development of younger, weaker plants in challenging environments.

Revised Answer (140 words):
In the reading passage, we learn about "nurse plants," which refers to mature plants that support younger plants' growth by providing shelter and resources in harsh environments. The lecture provides an example of this concept by discussing trees in a desert environment. The professor explains that young plants struggle to adapt to these conditions due to factors such as dry soil and intense sunlight exposure. However, by growing near a Palaverde tree - a type of nurse plant - young cacti can benefit from the shade provided by the tree, which helps to keep the soil moist and protect them from direct sunlight. Additionally, the fallen leaves from the Palaverde tree enrich the soil with nutrients, further supporting the growth of the young cacti. This example effectively illustrates how nurse plants can help young plants survive and thrive in challenging environments.
