Professor
Taday we wil be discussing standardized testing. Before you come into the classroom this afternoon, I want you to think about whether standardized testing is effective. On the one hand, the tests provide a way to determine whether students possess the knowuledge and skills that they should at their age. On the other hand, some argue that standardized testing encourages memorization but neglects critical thinkcing. Would you say that children should be given standardized tests? Why or why not?
Enrique
I think that students should not be given standardized tests. As the professor mentioned, people say that these tests focus on students remembering facts and equations rather than thinking critically. I realize that it is important to know those things, but they don't realistically reflect how well educated children are. Moreover, many people are quite intelligent and knowledgeable, but they do not do well on tests. So, standardized tests make them look like bad students when they are not.
Helena
I believe that standardized tests are the only way to evaluate thousands of students in the same grade level. Yes, there are different kinds of students who learn differently, but when you have to test so many students, you cannot accommodate everyone. Plus, until the end of high school, these tests do not have a significant effect on their future. The tests show how well they are learning, and how well they are being taught.

While I understand Helena's perspective that standardized tests are necessary for evaluating a large number of students, I concur with Enrique's assertion that such tests should not be administered to students. The primary reason for my stance is the undue stress these tests impose on young learners. In our increasingly competitive world, academic institutions often assess applicants based on their performance in standardized tests, in addition to their high school grades. Although initially intended to gauge a student's aptitude, these exams have inadvertently become a crucial criterion for college admissions, thereby exerting immense pressure on students and potentially leading to mental health issues such as depression. Rather than relying solely on test scores, educational institutions should adopt a more holistic approach by considering students' extracurricular activities and overall conduct in their daily school life.
