Professor
Student A
Well, Professor, from my perspective, smartphones are a net positive for society. Yes, they do have some drawbacks, but it's important to remember that these devices have made our lives significantly easier in many ways. We can connect with anyone, anywhere in the world, within seconds. We can educate ourselves on virtually any topic. Moreover, smartphones have been instrumental in pushing for social change, with various movements mobilizing and gaining traction through social media. I believe we need to focus on responsible usage and digital literacy, instead of blaming the technology itself.
Student B
I respect Peter's points, but I disagree. I believe smartphones have been largely detrimental to our society. They're a key player in creating a culture of instant gratification and superficiality. Our attention spans are dwindling, our ability to engage in deep thought and meaningful conversation is eroding. Yes, we have access to a world of information, but we're also subjected to an overwhelming amount of misinformation. Also, our dependence to these devices has had negative impacts on sleep patterns and personal relationships. The ubiquity of smartphones and the culture they foster is, in my opinion, a cause for concern.

While Peter's perspective on smartphones as a net positive for society holds merit, particularly in terms of convenience and access to information, I believe there is another aspect that makes them increasingly beneficial: their camera systems. In my opinion, smartphones have revolutionized photography by allowing us to capture moments effortlessly. These devices cater to our desire to photograph virtually anything we find interesting, fostering our aesthetic sense as we consider composition and framing. Moreover, they enable us to preserve cherished memories. For instance, imagine standing before the majestic Statue of Liberty; with a smartphone in hand, one can easily snap a photo and revisit that moment later. Reflecting on these captured memories can help alleviate negative emotions and promote a more positive outlook on life. (130 words)
