Professor
We've been discussing the idea that human well-being is not necessarily improved by ever-increasing production and consumption of goods and services. Some people argue that humans already consume too many goods, from clothing to electronics to food; they believe that excessive consumption has created serious problems for humanity and even the planet. Do you agree that excessive consumption- buying more than we truly need- has become a serious problem? Why or why not?
Paul
I absolutely agree. We buy far more than we need, and that can't continue indefinitely. For years people have used shopping as a form of recreation. The products bought on a whim are filling up landfills, and the energy expended producing the goods has created a global warming crisis. We should start gradually reducing consumption.
Claire
I disagree with the idea that overconsumption is a dramatic problem. I agree there is some overconsumption, but it happens mostly with wealthy people. I think in general almost everyone else already buys only what they need. In fact, many people around the world are not even able to obtain everything they need.

I concur with Claire’s idea. The reason why overconsumption has become an issue is social media has brought rich people’s life into public’s view that people are increasingly aware of purchasing too much product can cause waste and unfulfillment, but poor people’s life has perfectly hide behind. I would further argue that the limitation of consuming product can never be clear. For example, it is hard to identify whether buying a Benz car or a 100-kola diamond is more overconsumption. I acknowledge Paul’s idea. However, money that in flow gains value. If everybody purchases goods with full concern and never pay for the things they don’t need, that will definitely cause a storm in world’s economics. And indeed, the producing processes created greenhouse gasses and many other wastes such as water contamination in cloth factory and carbon dioxide in steel making factory. Facing this challenge, we shouldn’t limit people’s need but find clean producing ways to improve the producing process.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision
I concur with Claire's perspective that overconsumption is not as significant a problem as it may seem. The prominence of social media has amplified the visibility of wealthy individuals' excessive consumption, while the struggles of those living in poverty remain hidden from public view. Furthermore, it is challenging to establish clear boundaries for what constitutes overconsumption; for instance, determining whether purchasing a luxury car or an extravagant diamond is more excessive proves difficult. While I acknowledge Paul's concerns, I believe that restricting consumption could negatively impact the global economy. Money gains value through circulation, and if everyone were to only purchase essential items, economic turmoil would likely ensue. Admittedly, production processes contribute to environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions and water contamination. However, instead of limiting people's needs, we should focus on developing cleaner production methods to mitigate these adverse effects. (147 words)
