Some educators think that in our global, tech-oriented world, students need to focus on nonfiction texts, such as news stories, technical manuals, or other informational materials. They say that reading poetry, novels, and short stories is not the optimal use of the limited time that students have in the classroom. How do you view this approach to education? Should schools limit the teaching of fictional texts in favor of teaching more practical, nonfiction texts?
Andrew
Education has to evolve. Nowadays, there's an enormous amount of economic and political data freely available online. It's important that students can evaluate this information to understand local and world events in order to be good citizens. Reading fiction is a wonderful hobby, but school should prepare students for adult life and its responsibilities.
Claire
I spent a lot of class time in high school analyzing literature. I'm studying to be an engineer, so l admit that reading fiction in school was not directly applicable to my future occupation, but it did instill in me a love of reading, which is very valuable. I feel better equipped now to understand all sorts of written material.

In my opinion, I firmly agree with Claire's idea that schools should not limit the teaching of fictional texts. While concentrating on non fiction texts like technical manuals is indeed beneficial for those students who are interested in studying science and engineering in the future, for those who want to become an artist or writer, reading poetry and novels may be a better choice. Since schools should be able to accommodate extensive students with different ambutions and interests, students who have less interests on technologies should not be overlooked and should be motivated too. Furthermore, althought our soeity is tech-oriented now, it also needs arts and romances. No one want to live in a soeity teem with engineers and programmers. While I admitted Andrew's idea that there is much economic and political data online, there is also enormous useless or inaccurate data on the Internet. And these information is not appraised by teachers, which may lead students to be misleaded.

Section Title: Balancing Fiction and Nonfiction in Education
In my opinion, I firmly concur with Claire's perspective that schools should not restrict the teaching of fictional texts. While focusing on nonfiction materials, such as technical manuals, is undoubtedly advantageous for students pursuing careers in science and engineering, those aspiring to become artists or writers may find greater value in exploring poetry and novels. As educational institutions should accommodate a diverse range of ambitions and interests, it is essential not to overlook or undermine students with less interest in technology. Moreover, although our society is increasingly tech-oriented, there remains a crucial need for art and romance. A world teeming solely with engineers and programmers would lack the richness that comes from creative expression. While I acknowledge Andrew's point regarding the abundance of economic and political data online, it is important to recognize that the internet also contains vast amounts of unreliable or inaccurate information. Without proper guidance from educators, students may be easily misled by such content. (166 words)
