TOEFL TPO -1 Academic Discussion Writing Sample: Doctor Diaz: What should children be learning in school? Many people believe that time in the classroom should be spent acquiring foundational knowledge in subjects like math, reading, science, and history. Others feel that it's important for a child's creativity to be nurtured, and thus the school curriculum must include classes in art and music. There's so much to learn, yet so little time in school to learn it all! What do you think should be included in the curriculum? Why? Claire I agree that traditional subjects like math, science, and reading are important. but so are classes in art and music. Engaging with art and music can help children be more creative and can stimulate their imaginations. That in turn facilitates critical thinking, which is essential in any curriculum, so l am in favor of including art and music in the school day. Paul Sure, drawing pictures and listening to music is fun, but children can do that on their own time. The school day is too short as it is. and there is so much foundational knowledge in math, reading, science, and history that children need to learn: it is better to spend classroom time on that foundational knowledge and let kids explore art and music at home.

This week, we will be discussing space exploration. Some people think that it is a waste of money for governments to fund space exploration. Others disagree with this view arguing that space exploration is a valuable and necessary investment for our future. They think that it is worthy for governments to fund space exploration. I want to know what you think about this topic. Do you think that governments should fund space exploration? Why or why not?
Kelly
I don't think that governments should fund space exploration because it will be too costly to build spaceships and develop related technologies. Though space exploration tech costs billions, it doesn't offer direct benefits to most people, which makes its funding a controversial issue.
Andrew
Personally, I do think that all the costs will be worth it. The potential scientific discoveries and technological advancements could have far-reaching impacts that justify the initial investment. Imagine the new inventions that might come from this exploration. Such technology could greatly improve our everyday lives.

Although I can recognize the validity of Andrew’s viewpoint, I am more inclined to agree with the perspective of Kelly that governments should not fund space exploration. As Kelly mentioned, space exploration costs a lot but casts little direct benefit to most of us. In addition to what Kelly has raised, I would like to add that the money spent is more reasonable to be used for environmental protection. This point of view is based on the belief that the money is largely from the revenue paid by the taxpayers, so it should be spent on something closely associated with people’s health. For instance, consider a scenario in which governments use the money to deal with air pollution and waste water. It is evident that this would avoid the irreversible harm to our environment and improve the quality of air and water which can benefit our health. This example can effectively support my position. Conversely, Andrew seems to ignore the point that a large number of new discoveries and advancements may not able to transition from theoretical knowledge to certain practice application. Therefore, I maintain the perspective that governments should not fund space exploration.

改进示例1(英文): Instead of saying "For instance, consider a scenario in which governments use the money to deal with air pollution and waste water.", you could provide a specific example of a country or city that has successfully used funds for environmental protection, leading to tangible improvements in air quality or water resources.
改进示例2(英文): To further emphasize the importance of environmental protection over space exploration, you could discuss the potential consequences of neglecting our environment, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and health issues caused by pollution.
改进示例1(英文): For the introduction, you could write something like "In this essay, I will argue that governments should prioritize environmental protection over space exploration due to the limited direct benefits of the latter and the pressing need to address environmental issues."
改进示例2(英文): To maintain paragraph consistency, you could structure your essay by first discussing Kelly's viewpoint and providing your additional arguments, then addressing Andrew's viewpoint and explaining why you disagree with it. This way, each paragraph focuses on one perspective and its related arguments.

Title: 6 文章修订
While I acknowledge the merit in Andrew's argument, I find myself more aligned with Kelly's stance that governments should not allocate funds for space exploration. As Kelly pointed out, the astronomical costs associated with space exploration yield minimal direct benefits for the majority of the population. Expanding on Kelly's argument, I propose that it would be more prudent to allocate these resources towards environmental protection initiatives.
This perspective stems from the notion that government revenue, primarily derived from taxpayers, should be directed towards projects that have a more immediate and tangible impact on public well-being. For example, imagine if governments were to invest in combating air pollution and wastewater management instead of space exploration. Such an approach would not only help mitigate irreversible environmental damage but also enhance air and water quality, thereby promoting better health for all citizens. This scenario effectively bolsters my position.
On the other hand, Andrew appears to overlook the fact that many scientific discoveries and technological advancements may not readily translate from theoretical knowledge into practical applications. Consequently, I maintain that governments should refrain from funding space exploration endeavors. (187 words)
