TOEFL TPO -1 Academic Discussion Writing Sample: Doctor Achebe: We've been discussing the idea that human well-being is not necessarily improved by ever-increasing production and consumption of goods and services. Some people argue that humans already consume too many goods, from clothing to electronics to food; they believe that excessive consumption has created serious problems for humanity and even the planet. Do you agree that excessive consumption--buying more than we truly need--has become a serious problem? Why or why not?

Doctor Achebe: We've been discussing the idea that human well-being is not necessarily improved by ever-increasing production and consumption of goods and services. Some people argue that humans already consume too many goods, from clothing to electronics to food; they believe that excessive consumption has created serious problems for humanity and even the planet. Do you agree that excessive consumption--buying more than we truly need--has become a serious problem? Why or why not?
Student A
Andrew: I absolutely agree. We buy far more than we need, and that can't continue indefinitely. For years people have used shopping as a form of recreation. The products bought on a whim are filling up landfills, and the energy expended producing the goods has created a global warming crisis. We should start gradually reducing consumption.
Student B
Claire: I disagree with the idea that over-consumption is a dramatic problem. I agree there is some over-consumption, but it happens mostly with wealthy people. I think in general almost everyone else already buys only what they need. In fact, many people around the world are not even able to obtain everything they need.

From my perspective, I strongly agree with Andrew’s viewpoint that mass consumption could be served as a severe problem currently due to universal conformity. Although some individuals could have purchasing behavior with rationality, still numerous consumers would follow suit to purchase unnecessary products blindly, triggering dramatically waste. For example, it is common that a vast array of consumers would be swayed be a few words of praise in the broadcast room and incited by sales in the tens of thousands, leading to impulse consumption. However, because lack of searching more comprehensive comments from other users, it is inevitable for them to purchase unsatisfactory products, especially skin care products, ending up with a waste of money.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision
In my opinion, excessive consumption indeed poses a significant problem in today's society, primarily due to widespread conformity. While some individuals may exhibit rational purchasing behavior, a considerable number of consumers tend to blindly follow trends and acquire unnecessary products, resulting in substantial waste. For instance, many consumers are easily swayed by praise in advertising and influenced by massive sales promotions, leading to impulsive purchases. Unfortunately, without thoroughly researching user reviews and product information, these individuals often end up with unsatisfactory items—particularly in the case of skincare products—ultimately wasting their money.
