Today, we’re going to discuss the impact of social media on society. On one hand, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have connected people from all over the world. However, there are concerns about the negative effects of social media, such as the spread of misinformation, the rise of cyberbullying, and addiction to social media use. What do you think? Does social media cause more harm than good?
Sarah
I think that social media has caused more harm than good. While it’s true that social media platforms have connected people in unprecedented ways, they have also caused real harm to individuals and societies. Additionally, social media platforms have been linked to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, particularly among young people.
Mark
I disagree with Sara. I think that social media has mostly improved society. For instance, it has given a voice to people that previously were ignored. Moreover, it has provided a platform for political activism that has led to positive change. And, of course, social media has made it easy for everyone to stay connected to family and friends who are far away. While there are negative aspects of social media, they are far outweighed by the benefits.

When it comes to me, I strongly agree with Sarah’s idea that social media does more harm than good to society because it leads young people to suffer from mental health problems. Furthermore, I would add that social media makes relationships between people and their friends more distant and isolated in reality. Nowadays, everybody is always busy working alone in this society with fierce competition, having little time to socialize with others. Under this circumstance, people will use their time that is already less to chat with others online by commenting on videos or photos that they are interested in. Following that, with the emptiness of lonely gradually satisfied by chatting online, people will start not to consider squeezing out precious time to meet friends. Namely, they will focus too much on social media and think it unnecessary to contact their friends in reality even if there is free time left for them. As a result, it is natural that people have colder relationships with their friends. Take me as an example, when I was preparing for an important exam, I always chatted with people online who did the same thing, but when that thing was done, I was already used to socializing online rather than meeting friends in some restaurants, which need to take a hard time for me to adjust to focusing on the reality. Therefore, I am still convinced that social media does more harm than good.

Section Title: The Detrimental Effects of Social Media on Society
In my opinion, I concur with Sarah's assertion that social media inflicts more harm than good upon society, primarily due to its contribution to mental health issues among young people. Additionally, I contend that social media fosters a sense of detachment and isolation in real-life relationships. In today's fiercely competitive world, individuals are constantly preoccupied with work and have limited opportunities for genuine social interaction. Consequently, they resort to online communication through comments on videos or photos that pique their interest.
Gradually, the void of loneliness is filled by these virtual interactions, diminishing the perceived need for face-to-face encounters with friends. This shift in focus towards social media can lead to colder and more distant relationships in reality. For instance, while preparing for a crucial examination, I found myself engaging with others online who shared similar goals. However, once the exam was over, I realized that I had become accustomed to online communication rather than meeting friends at restaurants or other social venues. This required a significant effort on my part to reorient myself towards real-life interactions.
In light of these observations, I remain steadfast in my belief that social media causes more harm than good within society. (208 words)
